Happy St Patrick's Day Sumi and all
Thanks, having a quiet day at home. The parade in town and the first F1 race of the season both started at 14:00 sharp. Guess what we're doing?

Watching stupid motor racing! (DH anyway, I'm thinking about chickens and chatting to you all)

You all are talking about using neosporin and bacitracin on navels and such,I have been using my homemade comfrey salve and it has been working great. Reduces the inflammation and heals the area in question very quickly using ingredients from mother nature rather than man made ones.

I am not a big herbal remedy kind of guy when it comes to medicine unless there is data to support it. There are lots of products in nature that are beneficial. We have been using them for thousands of years and I take scientifically proven extracts including flax seed oil daily .

The average life expectancy of man 100 years ago was 31 years of age. Now its 67. The biggest contributors to this number are hygiene and antibiotics.

I like numbers. Data. Clinical trials that compare one product against another in a blinded study.

I know nothing about comfrey so I cant recommend it or even use it myself. It would be great to see any data on its effectiveness if you know sources.

Oz, there are many different views on comfrey. Like most things it has good qualities and bad qualities. There is a lot of information on the internet on comfrey and it's medicinal uses. The good and and the bad.

I've seen for myself what good it can do, so I'm a fan. I think like with any other medicine it should be used with caution and with the risks in mind.

thanks sumi.

it looks like a good product if used correctly. i would hesitate to use it on a fresh wound as it does not appear to have any antimicrobial qualities. it also could be dangerous on animals that lick wounds.

when it comes down to it - natural products are chemicals just like man made ones - this one is an excellent example of how they can be used and how they can be toxic.

My personal belief when it comes to wounds cuts and sprains is the the human body is amazing at healing itself. provide a clean dry environment and let it do its job. I have do not use anything but water on my cuts and grazes. I do not cover them with dressings unless I am being exposed to something external that is unclean. If its too serious to treat like that, I cart myself off to an urgent care for suturing.

ETA - now chickens are another thing altogether
