Hi All!
frow.gif
Well, with the week I've had I'm still 248 posts behind on this thread, but wanted to take a break from reading and say Hi! Cochins you did an awesome job on Sally's Avy! I have talent, but drawing is not one of them, I can't even draw a proper stick figure, LOL! What an awesome gift to have!!
I was so happy AND jealous to see that Oz made it home safely! Have I said before I want to go someplace tropical???

Okay, back to reading! This'll teach me to get behind!

FYI not ignoring, having Sat dish issues, I think the receiver or dish is malfunctioning as I keep having to reboot, soon I have a feeling it will just die.

Anyways BQ is going to post some hatch issues here, in case I cant get on y'all can jump in and help along, she is doing awesome though!

Conversation between Sally Sunshine and me

Hi Sally!

I did what you said and opened the membrane a little tiny bit, and the chick is alive and moving and WAS poking his beak out...but now he's managed to pull the flap of the membrane back down and close it off again...should I wait it out? Seeking your advice here. Thanks!!

Sally Sunshine

just so he can get air, I was worried because of that water spraying and resealing that slit, if that makes sense! when did he first pip again, and what time zone are you lol

10 hours ago...10am eastern time...I'm in New York. I only did the mist twice....not enough that it was dripping all over the place...but I stopped once you said not to and just squeezed some more damp paper towels in there. He keeps poking his beak out but doesn't seem to be turning at all....I don't want to intervene if I don't have to, but he does have me a little worried...he's chirping like mad!

Sally Sunshine

ok I am right at ya, eastern pa lol

any others hatch? how many pips total now and any showing signs of zipping yet?

blzzrdqueen

He was the first to pip, 4 other pips besides him, 1 at 12:45pm, and the other 3 between 5 and 6pm. No one shows signs of zipping yet.

Sally Sunshine

ok its early yet, have you noticed any chirping starting up again?

blzzrdqueen

Oh yes, he is chirping up a storm, and he is pushing his beak through the hole, but not making any attempt to pull it back in and start zipping...

Sally Sunshine

it sometime takes over 24 hrs

blzzrdqueen

I know...I'll keep a close eye on him....

When should I start stepping in to help out? (If and when)

Sally Sunshine

tomorrow early am if he isn't out or progressed

blzzrdqueen

Ok...What would the procedure be?

I won't be going to bed I don't think...lol...

Sally Sunshine

you will take the tops off above air cell and dampen membranes and see how far along their vessels are absorbed, if still red then add ointment and wait for them to recede, most times chicks get out themselves if you cleared the outer shell away from the air cell end.

Sally Sunshine

but I have a good feeling they will get out themselves while you sleep!

blzzrdqueen

Ok, so I would carefully zip the shell myself, correct? I have basictracin for ointment, is that ok? It has zinc in it.

Sally Sunshine

yup that's what I use its clear ointment no pain relief in it. be careful close to the lower part of air cell, if you cause a bleed press a dry papertowel on it fast and hold it for a few seconds bleed should stop, if not hold until it stops and don't go lower.

Sally Sunshine

you will find when u open them up, there is more chick than air cell, don't look anything like when you candle LOL!

blzzrdqueen

Ok, I'm pretty confident I won't have to do this...my husband came in and started talking to it, and he quick shot back into the shell, and tried to come back out next to the hole...now he is back to sticking his beak out of the original hole, so there is some hope that he will zip on his own.

And I *think* i have pip #6, on the very top of an egg...is that normal?

blzzrdqueen

Good morning.

I had to help the chick...I broke away most of the top of the shell, except the very top...I wasn't too sure about the vessels but I did knick one, so I did the papertowel thing and it stopped bleeding right away...I put the bacitracin on the exposed membrane and he hasn't tried to move. I'm not feeling to confident about him...I'm pretty sure he's getting weaker...I took pics but I can't load them from my phone, and I sent them to my email so I can upload them but they haven't come through yet...as soon as they do I will send them to you...

I have 2 D'Uccles that hatched and my lone blue Amercauna hatched, but his yolk and umbilicus were not completly absorbed, so I put him in a bowl in the bator....not sure what to do with him now...he is very vocal, as are the other two who hatched.

I really really appreciate your help...I wouldn't have been able to do this with out you and the others on this forum!

blzzrdqueen

This was before the bacitracin really made the membrane clear...his beak is on the lower left side there...still upside down...and even an hour after doing this, he hasn't moved a bit...

blzzrdqueen

He IS alive, just not making any attempt to move to get out of the shell.

Sally Sunshine

betadine his umbilical or iodine he will be fine, keep him separate so they don't pick at his "hangings" give electrolites and vits if you have them, see the hatching 101 article at the bottom chick care I think.

if there is blood he isn't ready that's all, let him rest, sometimes there are things wrong with them, deformities and stuff we really cant see physically, your doing great don't second guess yourself at this stage, you did your research so you can only do so much. just talk to him and let him do his thing, again if you hit blood he is still absorbing.

blzzrdqueen

Ok, for the chick in the bowl, I will use the betadine, the ONLY kind I could find was iodines tincture...is that ok?

How long do you think the stubborn chick should get? I hope he and the unabsorbed one is ok...

The other two are great...I think I may move them to the brooder when they are fully fluffed...all three that hatched are very vocal....

Sally Sunshine

ok I can see you don't understand, its ok..... you need to take the TOP off the egg, there are two membranes that outerone that is attached to the outer shell and an innerone around the actual chick that is below that air cell line, its the inner membrane we need to put ointment on and check for vessles.

blzzrdqueen

So the white one needs to come off too? I ripped a little hole in that one, I thought by accident, and I didn't see another membrane...maybe it's just my untrained eye...I have to run to the store real quick but I will do this when I get back, 1/2 hour at most.

Sally Sunshine

if you look at the egg on the left above real close at the ends of the egg shell you can see that thicker white membrane, that's the outer, now look down at that chick its encased in a inner membrane, this is why there is an air cell, the innermembrane separates the air cell from the chick! its the inner membrane that holds all those vessles, HOWEVER don't go too low on the outermembrane because where they come low to meet up with the innermembrane they are sorta stuck together and you can get bleed

Sally Sunshine

adding.... so when you have your chick looking like the ones on the right above, post a pic!

blzzrdqueen

Ok, I just got the outter membrane off...here is what we have...

Sally Sunshine

I cant tell from the pic, do you see veins?

blzzrdqueen

Yes, some, not alot...

blzzrdqueen

I have to run to the store...but I have a live stream going if you want to look in on him...

Sally Sunshine

he is in resting stage not struggling. I would take that dry chick out so he doesn't peck and create a bleed in the assisted one, my sat is screwing up for internet!
so if it ditches me you know why! uggggg I cant stream live for long as it takes all my data.

blzzrdqueen

Ok, I will move the two blondies...

blzzrdqueen

Ok, I moved the two blondies....

the isolated chick keeps escaping from his bowl, so I let him out of it and put iodine on the stump and on the hanging stuff...I figure he will be ok until someone else hatches...I have two more getting ready to zip soon...

blzzrdqueen

Ok, the black chick just got a bit of the electrolyte drink...how much and how often should I give it to him? I don't want to keep opening the bator....

Sally Sunshine

how much yolk was not absorbed? you have a pic of its navel?
I lost connection again!!

Can you copy an paste this conversation to the diary thread? just in case I loose it completely? I think the dish or else the rcvr is failing as I have to keep rebooting it!

Hanging yolk

Unbilicus...

He sure is a tired baby...but he chirps away!

I would use floss dipped in betadine, and tie that off and then cut it down to where u tied it, wash with betadine / iodine then. its the umbilical not yolk by what the image looks like. once you do that it will turn black and fall off

Place those 2 eggs in an upright position and keep them like that until the end when the chicks are pipped, zipped and ready to go. In a normal hatch the chicks will pip internally, into the air sac, which they expect to be in the fat end of the egg. If it's not there they may pip into egg fluid and drown.

Good luck with your hatch!

Agree. It wont hurt to hatch in a cut down egg carton.

Assisted chick is trying to hatch, he broke off more of his shell and is starting to push himself out of the inner membrane!!
celebrate.gif
really? he doesn't look ready yet, if there is blood in that membrane he may not be absorbed. I will check the cam

Ok...can I also wait for the husband to be home to do that, or should I just do it now?
