Well, with the week I've had I'm still 248 posts behind on this thread, but wanted to take a break from reading and say Hi! Cochins you did an awesome job on Sally's Avy! I have talent, but drawing is not one of them, I can't even draw a proper stick figure, LOL! What an awesome gift to have!!
I was so happy AND jealous to see that Oz made it home safely! Have I said before I want to go someplace tropical???
Okay, back to reading! This'll teach me to get behind!
FYI not ignoring, having Sat dish issues, I think the receiver or dish is malfunctioning as I keep having to reboot, soon I have a feeling it will just die.
I did what you said and opened the membrane a little tiny bit, and the chick is alive and moving and WAS poking his beak out...but now he's managed to pull the flap of the membrane back down and close it off again...should I wait it out? Seeking your advice here. Thanks!!

10 hours ago...10am eastern time...I'm in New York. I only did the mist twice....not enough that it was dripping all over the place...but I stopped once you said not to and just squeezed some more damp paper towels in there. He keeps poking his beak out but doesn't seem to be turning at all....I don't want to intervene if I don't have to, but he does have me a little worried...he's chirping like mad!

He was the first to pip, 4 other pips besides him, 1 at 12:45pm, and the other 3 between 5 and 6pm. No one shows signs of zipping yet.

you will take the tops off above air cell and dampen membranes and see how far along their vessels are absorbed, if still red then add ointment and wait for them to recede, most times chicks get out themselves if you cleared the outer shell away from the air cell end.

Ok, so I would carefully zip the shell myself, correct? I have basictracin for ointment, is that ok? It has zinc in it.

yup that's what I use its clear ointment no pain relief in it. be careful close to the lower part of air cell, if you cause a bleed press a dry papertowel on it fast and hold it for a few seconds bleed should stop, if not hold until it stops and don't go lower.

Ok, I'm pretty confident I won't have to do this...my husband came in and started talking to it, and he quick shot back into the shell, and tried to come back out next to the hole...now he is back to sticking his beak out of the original hole, so there is some hope that he will zip on his own.
And I *think* i have pip #6, on the very top of an egg...is that normal?

Good morning.
I had to help the chick...I broke away most of the top of the shell, except the very top...I wasn't too sure about the vessels but I did knick one, so I did the papertowel thing and it stopped bleeding right away...I put the bacitracin on the exposed membrane and he hasn't tried to move. I'm not feeling to confident about him...I'm pretty sure he's getting weaker...I took pics but I can't load them from my phone, and I sent them to my email so I can upload them but they haven't come through yet...as soon as they do I will send them to you...
I have 2 D'Uccles that hatched and my lone blue Amercauna hatched, but his yolk and umbilicus were not completly absorbed, so I put him in a bowl in the bator....not sure what to do with him now...he is very vocal, as are the other two who hatched.
I really really appreciate your help...I wouldn't have been able to do this with out you and the others on this forum!

betadine his umbilical or iodine he will be fine, keep him separate so they don't pick at his "hangings" give electrolites and vits if you have them, see the hatching 101 article at the bottom chick care I think.
if there is blood he isn't ready that's all, let him rest, sometimes there are things wrong with them, deformities and stuff we really cant see physically, your doing great don't second guess yourself at this stage, you did your research so you can only do so much. just talk to him and let him do his thing, again if you hit blood he is still absorbing.

ok I can see you don't understand, its ok..... you need to take the TOP off the egg, there are two membranes that outerone that is attached to the outer shell and an innerone around the actual chick that is below that air cell line, its the inner membrane we need to put ointment on and check for vessles.

So the white one needs to come off too? I ripped a little hole in that one, I thought by accident, and I didn't see another membrane...maybe it's just my untrained eye...I have to run to the store real quick but I will do this when I get back, 1/2 hour at most.

if you look at the egg on the left above real close at the ends of the egg shell you can see that thicker white membrane, that's the outer, now look down at that chick its encased in a inner membrane, this is why there is an air cell, the innermembrane separates the air cell from the chick! its the inner membrane that holds all those vessles, HOWEVER don't go too low on the outermembrane because where they come low to meet up with the innermembrane they are sorta stuck together and you can get bleed

I would use floss dipped in betadine, and tie that off and then cut it down to where u tied it, wash with betadine / iodine then. its the umbilical not yolk by what the image looks like. once you do that it will turn black and fall off
Place those 2 eggs in an upright position and keep them like that until the end when the chicks are pipped, zipped and ready to go. In a normal hatch the chicks will pip internally, into the air sac, which they expect to be in the fat end of the egg. If it's not there they may pip into egg fluid and drown.
