Oh and dont forget to talk your broody gal..... tell herJust had to rescue a chick from my broody. The chick pipped and mom accidentally crushed the egg with her breastbone. Which meant the chick couldn't zip and was trapped by the drying membrane. When I found it now the exposed fluff was already dry and the membrane was leathery. I brought the frantic chick inside and removed the bits of shell and tore the membrane off so she can get out. She's in the brooder now, complaining about her bumpy hatch. I just wanted to let you know about this, it doesn't happen often, but keep an eye out when your hens' chicks start hatching, just in case. I've lost a chick this way before. With this new baby the total hatched is 5. I removed more eggs from the broody and put them in the incubator and when I candled I could see one starting to pip internally. I got another malpositioned one in the incubator that I'm a bit worried about. It's weak and not ready to come out yet. I'm hoping it will hang on 'till tomorrow morning.
“The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it.”
