Awww really? The pet store I got it from had it in a 10 gal tank.. I asked them if it was ok to have the koi in there and they said yes /: maybe it's a special koi? One that stays small? Darn in payed 20 bucks for that fish...
I think I did get some sort of fantail goldfish! I'll post pics later

Sorry, but there aren't any miniature koi. A few people have claimed to have developed them, but most have been proven wrong. Pet stores keep fish in 10 gallon tanks simply to sell them. They don't have the space and they can't afford to keep 125 gallon tanks up and running. Koi can be kept in small tanks temporarily, but they will grow and they will grow fast. Do a little research and you will quickly find that the minimum tank size recommended for koi is 100 gallons. Koi are meant to be kept in ponds. I'm really sorry, I was hoping that you would see my response, but they really shouldn't be kept in tanks that small.

Fan-tail goldfish can thrive in a 10 gallon tank because they don't have the best swimming capabilities and they stay smaller.

PM me if you have any questions. and if you want a second opinion, post in the BYC Aquarium thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/608356/byc-aquarium-thread/130#post_10844434

Oh ok. Well that sucks for me. I have a little outdoor duck pond that is probably 30 or 40 gallons I can move he koi out to when it starts to get bigger, and my friend is giving me another duck pond with a filter I believe this summer. And if none of that works, I suppose I can just give the koi to my neighbor down the street. They have a huge pond- it's almost like a lake

Totally Agree! The only thing I will add is that any goldfish have a much higher concentration of ammonia in their urine so a good filter and NOT overcrowding is essential. I would have no more than 3 fantails in a 10 gallon. It's healthier for the fish and easier on the upkeep for you.

The tank came with a nice looking filter and I only have one fantail. :)

There you go using my favorite saying again...whipper snappers! I thank you for your post , I'm waiting for my genesis in the mail right now and I was sweating a lil til you chimed in. I didn't know bags of water would help absorb temp spikes, so I learned something. Nobody should take anything too seriously and I've learned a lot from people's debates on here. Also do you know what Sally was talking about with pennies in the water wells or something to that affect?
I love that bator by the way! Is that a display case & how deep is it?
it "display case bator" is 48x34x11. its just made from a sheet of 3/4 marine grade ply, some rolled foil covered foam insulation and plexi glass for the two outer quarters of the top. it cost about 50 dollars all in. it can hold 246 eggs on turners. i have 197 in there.

copper is a strong antmicrobial. putting a penny in the water prevents mold and bacteria building up in that warm moist environment.

So after moving my two broody girls into my house, my little Rosie went broody today! Apparently she was waiting for the middle nesting box to open up. I am going to collect her eggs and try to start them all together this time around. Three broody Silkies! How precious!

Little Rosy

My roo on the run!

Today is day 20. I've been on lockdown since yesterday. No pips yet.

There was an incident last week though. Girl child discovered the incubator had spiked to 104! (totally my fault) Thinking quickly, she unplugged it. That would have been mostly ok (I don't think she knew I'd put a thermostat knob in) BUT instead of frequent monitoring of the temp...she went to read a book for a few hours. The temperature dropped to 83.

I came home from work to find an incubator back up to 100...but with a record of an incredible drop in temperature. I was a seriously unhappy momma.

There was definately a high decible behaviour correction. (this is a continuous problem. I love the fact that she reads, but the reading to exclusion of all else, chores, homework, EATING, yeah...she's grounded from books for the time being) If these were mutt eggs or barnyard beauties or what ever, well, that would be one thing. But these are cream legbar eggs. I saved for months to afford these babies.

So, cross your fingers for girl child. She may be doing a LOT of chores in the near future. (I'll be doing eggtopsies to figure out when they died. If it's day 14, she's in serious trouble)

the spike will be more lethal than the drop. the kid did good

good luck.

I agree that the spike would be more lethal than the drop, but, we're talking a quick spike vs. hours at 83 PLUS the wandering off and reading rather than monitoring the temp once she'd 'adjusted' the temperature. She was already in trouble for reading instead of doing her homework, so this was the final straw for me. She *would* have done good if she'd stayed close by and kept an eye on the incubator. She did not. So, no, she did not do 'good'.
