Here, this is copied from another thread and I found this same answer in multiple places. The ducklings raised on the medicated started were just fine. If the active ingredient is amprolium, then it's safe.

You did an awesome job. Now, as soon as he's ready give that poor chick a bath and a blow and show us what he really looks like?

Put some antibiotic cream on the cord stump and keep him separate from the others and on a (sterile) clean cloth or something. Got to be careful with that navel now.

hmm... I wouldn't give him a bath yet.

Wet some paper towels with warm water and lay him on those. Change them out every time they get dirty and he will become clean fairly quickly.

Hugs to you Sally. It's amazing how both fragile and resilliant these little guys can be. You'll never know what they'll bounce back from, and the things that hurt them can be suprisingly small. Homemade Electrolyte Recipe for weak/ill chicks
2 C. Water
2 TBL. Brown Sugar, honey or molasses
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
Mix until all dry ingredients dissolve & Keep refrigerated
You could also use electrolyte drinks Gatorade or Pedialyte, or
3 drops of POLYVISOL (liquid childrens A-B-D vitamins)
Slowly drip along inner edge of lower beak.

Well I am thinking it needs a sponge bath at least, just because I want it to start being able to move around as much as possible. All that gunk/yolk has it pretty tight. I thought I would let it rest for a few mins. If it was as traumatic for the chick as it was for me, it needs a break.

I think you are right though Coch, it was a rupture. It is so sticky/crusty now. It must have been a small tear in the yolk though because it looked intact when I cut it off. So it must have been a slow leak. As you guys can see there was a bunch of stuff down there that was making it hard to see.
What is all that stuff?

I coated its navel in hydrogen peroxide. I figured that would help it dry out? Should I use ointment?


Umm how do you blow dry a chick? Haha use a floor heater while I sponge bathe it?

ok, long story short..... I have an egg that I removed part of the shell, not the membrane... as it is past hatching time and it was a very large egg and I had heard peeping for a few days and I lost one chick as it could not get past the pip and died in the shell, AFTER piping!!! All chicks were to large to zip and had to be assisted in steps... I only had 7 of 26 eggs pip... one died before I knew to help... I have 6 babies now and no more pips on any other eggs since yesterday......

The chick is not ready to hatch as I see blood vessels still... dont worry I was very careful and did not break any right now I am dampening a paper towel and placing it over the membrane to keep it moist, but I am having to do this too often and dont want to open the bator this much... and I dont have bactern and I dont have a car to get any today!!!! what else could I use.... Olive oil, Vaseline, vitamin E ???? thinking outside of the box

if you don't have that then just use clean water or distilled water
