Today's Summary 5/13/13

Sally really really missed oz.. just to reiterate !!

and oz is back and says he will investigate this whole meal worm marek's mess with sally

chicksooner's broody has been sitting for 19 days and she believes she hasnt got up at all and gave her treats - hatch day should be wednesday !!

tony asked how much ivermectin to use in the chickies water for the mites !! yikes mites oh no .. the tony mite saga continues

updates to follow

chicksooner said they use an old nylon with garden and poultry dust to dust their chickies

tony sprayed with sevin all day yesterday and dusted the chickens and himself today !! lets hope all those measures solve the mite problem !!

doug said hush puppies are not hard to make and shared his secret recipe (post 15491 )
tony thinks its a bit amusing that i cannot master bread products but i will be trying doug's hush puppies one day soon

doug had some hatched last night and more coming tonight ( i will look for an update as i scroll thru)
and had some shipped eggs that are clear .. second time from that shipper !!!
the other 80 he will candle in a day or so .. these were the ones that spiked out at 120 !!
the temps seem to be holding better in all the bators for him though

tweetynpetey thought the hush puppy recipe sounded yummy !!
and was slowly peeling to assist her little lone duckling
which i saw in a later post is finally here (pics to follow soon I am sure!) Congrats TnP!!

Waffles is having a little trouble keeping up with all this fast moving thread !! and is considering just going to buy an incubator because the tin one stinks !!

sumi and the moderators looked and said doug could post the fb links in his signature !! yay !

and said Sally send me some egss i miss hatching ..sallys threatened to send the long awaited scovy eggs lol

tony mentioned DE for helping with his problem and sumi suggested this article for reading up

https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/food-grade-de-diatomaceous-earth

hills congratulated the dougs !!
as did oz

oz told sally the mealworms are the same and said give him a few more days to research !!

ToastnJelly told tony the amount used for ivermectin there is 1cc per liter of water for 2 days

sally is excited cause we all have the secret hush puppy recipe now !! yay !!
and yes as sally said ty doug !!

ToastnJelly has rain and cold weather !! freeze warning for those who were fooled into planting early there !!
and only used the pour on IVER. when there was 6 hens but doesn't remeber the exact dose

dcba - oohh next spring would be good for hatching eggs with the busy rest of this year i have !! Ohh that is a hard question to answer -anyone want to chime in
Question: I have an incubator going at my son's school that because of when I received the eggs (mailed) and had to set them they are due over Memorial Day weekend so I will need to bring them home. Should I transport at lockdown or can I wait until the last minute in case there is an early hatcher I really was hoping the kids would see them hatch!

sally swears that when one is not looking chicks hatch faster - not looking ?!? what is this thing you speak of ? lol
6 CCL out and sara's tpolish
tony thanked tnj for the time and discussion in his mite issue
and agreed that they do seem to hatch faster that way

TnJ said no prob its what we are all here for and said sally's babies were cute big tubbys lol

sharron suggested trying to get rid of wild biurds to help with mite/pest control but tony said keeping wild birds away at his place is next to impossible

sumi suggested the the IVER. works slower than Sevin
and said prob ten days on the egg tossing
and the vet there said no worming before 5 weeks in chicks

dcba said some use frontline and has been itching just reading - I second that !!

doug had 3 assissted chicks that survived and has eggs hatching tonight (oohh maybe there will be an update as doug was online as i was typing and someone seemed to be adding to the thread as I worked
tongue2.gif
but as I got there i see it was not a doug update lol )

tony was complaining about the itching . i am with sumi ... imagine the poor chooks - no hands to scratch with !!

sally inspected the last two brahma eggs and one pipped but was in a pool of blood .. she left it as it was still moving (update?) the other was dead and two coturnix are in lockdown with those

gardening mama said she uses the Ivomec por on since she had an ifestation last year and it definitely helped and to wear a face mask when dusting (which tony later admitted to NOT doing !! bad bad lol )

sumi was looking for duck eggs and found an ad for Australorps which she loves but they have buildings to finish first ....AWOl needs buddies!! and it is at this point sally offered her duck eggs lol

cochins loved the pic sally shared showing embryo development (post 15565) and said she could use it in future drawings
she lost one of the diasterous high school chicks sadly
hugs.gif
and is not sure where to put the last one as her babies are all older

waffles posted finally!! in response to the ducky news ..we were all waiting for news of that duck lol

and hills posted a total backyarde style sign for sally
pretty !! - post 15580

RenneRae asked how much space is required to be able to say your chickens are free range (hmm good question)
lucky the dropped egg seems to be the most active one in the bator waitibng to hatch
and thinks there are 8pullets,4 roos, and 4 not sures in her barred rocks
and has silkies in the hatch going on with one rather ominous saddle cell !!

waffle has some interesting reactions to a FB post about an incubator - including suggestions to use the oven or an electric blanket -hee hee

sally's chick pictures are on post 15587

sally ask sumi about the fishbowl or something link and sumi shared it for waffle
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/750468/new-australian-hatching-mystery-egg-at-home
and reiterated to renne she doesnt have to hatch every egg like she ask .. she must eat some too lol

sally said for eggs with saddle dips hatching is better upright in a carton
i need to make a note of this as some of the scrambled first batch of eggs are looking decidely saddle shaped !!

hills blue andulsians (sp?) are hatching ..video in post 15597

tweetynpetey asked for a ducky name and thought maybe waddles ( i thought it was gonna be aflac ??? ) sumi reminded we cant help with names for what we havent seen lol

gardening mama said congrats to sally and sara on the hatch and suggested eeriely that sara had not been around cause she might have a life outside of BYC ( Gasp- that ius not possible..is it ?!?!? )
chicksooner agrees -who would dare have a life off of BYC

Toastnjelly watched the hatching !!

we all hope waffle gets well quick as there are antibiotics and steroid mix in there !! and as soon as there is improvement we get to see new pics !! so get well even faster -we love pics !!

sally shared pics of 3/4 adorale polish buggers on post 15609

sally needs ducky names too !!

tony questioned why an electric blanket wouldn't work as an incubator
and suggested bubba as a ducky name lol

and he had a long day treating mites and said the past 4 days have been long !!

doug suggested the ducks be named daffy huey dewey louie and donald ..cochins said dont forget daisy

cochins has to dust for lice on hers as well and has 2 days til finals are over as well as the semester !!

sharron said that her problem is sparrows not crows and they often forget how they got in with the chickens and bump around trying to get away
and said one lady did try the electric blanket and they didnt hatch then the lady asked if carrying them in her bra might work lol

and sharron hatched 2/15 lemon pyle brahmas and the very nice lady is sending more eggs !!

wobbles - TnP's new ducky is peeping a lot and doesnt need anything and there are pics to come soon !!

sally said for eggs with saddle dips hatching is better upright in a carton

IF it Dips on both sides and you cant tell where he should pip or the air cell is still loose and jello like keep upright, otherwise I lay with lower dip in the air cell up!
sally inspected the last two brahma eggs and one pipped but was in a pool of blood .. she left it as it was still moving (update?) the other was dead and two coturnix are in lockdown with those

Brahma was culled, leg was completely backwards and it never absorbed yolk after all this time so at lunch time today I did the deed : (
2 Cotournix nothing yet, if they are anything like the buttons, they wont hatch until day 18-19 Thurs. (don't know why but as I read a lot seems they take longer that you would think to hatch!) But I have all of Chads going into lockdown Thursday so they better move it so I don't have to crank on the A cooler bator!

If you have one of those car plugs let it there as long as you can!

Why am I losing chicks at the hatch. I just candled and had 8 dead fully formed chicks. That makes 10 total out of this hatch. I had two that hadnt hatched yet but had internally pipped. I started assist and one hasnt absorbed the yolk. Any idea why the chicks are dying at hatch and not pipping at all?
Doug, I got list of possible causes, you'll have to work your way through them and see which ticks the box(es):

Full term embryo, not pipped could be:

- Inadequate turning
- Humidity too high during incubation
- Incubator temperature too low
- Hatcher temperature too high
- Eggs got too cold at some stage
- Nutritional deficiencies (inadequate nutrients in hen's diet)
- Hereditary
- Embryological development accident
- Breeder disease (i.e. egg from sick hen)
- Inadequate ventilation
- Eggs were stored too long pre-incubation

Hope this helps!

Morning all!

Finally have my appt. to change from winter to summer tires. Oddly enough temp outside is 0 Celsius and sunny.
Today is day 20 for 22 eggs, 12 with saddle air cells.
