I have a question. I keep trying to hatch my BBB eggs and I keep getting to the pea sized disc of blood vessels stage and then nothing. I sent some to emmalyn and she had the same experience. Any thoughts? I think I was sold a very geriatric pair of BBB's. (Buff Brahma Bantams)
  1. Sign: Eggs candle clear; broken out eggs show blood ring or small embryo that died before 3 days of incubation; no dark eye visible. Causes:
  2. Eggs stored too long or under improper temperature.
  3. Fumigation improper -- too severe or done between 12 and 96 h of incubation.
  4. High temperature in early incubation.
  5. Low temperature in early incubation.
  6. Eggs damaged during transport by jarring, etc.
  7. Breeder flock diseases.
  8. Old breeders.
  9. Embryological development accidents.
  10. Inbreeding, chromosome abnormalities.
  11. Severe nutritional deficiencies, e.g., biotin, vitamin A, copper, vitamin E, boron, or pantothenic acid.
  12. Frequently associated with a high incidence of infertility.
  13. Drugs, toxins, or pesticides.
  14. Contamination.
  15. Embryos less developed at oviposition, i.e., pre-endoderm or very early endoderm formation.
  16. Sign: Dead embryos; 3 to 6 days of incubation; yolk sac circulatory system present, embryo on left side, no egg tooth. Causes:
  17. See causes 3.1-14
  18. Lack of ventilation, or sealed shells, carbon dioxide >1%.
  19. Improper turning -- <1/h or >6/h; improper turning angle.
  20. Vitamin deficiencies -- vitamin E, riboflavin, biotin, pantothenic acid, or linoleic acid.

I will add..... have you wormed your chickens lately and are you sure they do not have lice mites or other parasites?

Doug, I got list of possible causes, you'll have to work your way through them and see which ticks the box(es):

Full term embryo, not pipped could be:

- Inadequate turning
- Humidity too high during incubation
- Incubator temperature too low
- Hatcher temperature too high
- Eggs got too cold at some stage
- Nutritional deficiencies (inadequate nutrients in hen's diet)
- Hereditary
- Embryological development accident
- Breeder disease (i.e. egg from sick hen)
- Inadequate ventilation
- Eggs were stored too long pre-incubation

Hope this helps!

Thanks Sumi totally helped me

I'll put this out here: Chick hatched 1 day early but legs are out in front-side and she's sitting on her bum, can't seem to get up on her legs...what to do?
I replied to your PM, I think it was chicksooner who had this issue before, I never delt with this one. do her legs bend for you, can you try the tea cup? perhaps it will keep them under her as I stated in the pm?

We'll all be celebrating with you when the adoption is done and dusted and you can bring your babies home. It's nonsense that you have to be so far away from them all the time.

I dont keep spread sheets.
I have about a dozen thermostats and the digital ones all read exactly the same. They are right on with the thermostat in the soda pop machine. They are exact with 3 other thermometers. The rest I discarded because they were everywhere. I dont think thats the problem. I cant see that many digital thermometers being off.

Now for the incubators. The incubator that just hatched had an excellent hatch the last time with mostly my own eggs. not so good this time.

I havent had a good hatch yet in the still air ones. I say good hatch being 25 out of 30. Im getting 50% but the problem is the fully formed dead chicks. Thats what I dont get.

I have noticed that the forced air do have better hatches. I was just really disappointed with this hatch. I didnt get the all around pipping and breaking out. I had to assist most of them and I waited 24 hours on most of them that I helped. I lost a few because I didnt help them in time and some still havent absorbed the embryo.

Sometimes I wonder if the outside eggs are getting cold.

You guys have to bear with me if I can't keep up here tonight. My preferred modem is not getting signal, so I'm on the back-up and this thing is so slow it keeps disconnecting me

DH said he saw them working on the tower, so hopefully by tomorrow I will be able to use the faster one again. Not that it's "fast", but it's better than this!

Ive got a bator in the garage right now thats forced air and has shpped eggs and my own eggs. Ive only opened it twice since I put them in. Im going to lockdown thursday. The only thing different in this and the rest is that it has been out of my sight and I havent messed with it much at all.
