Today I got the brooders cleaned YET AGAIN! I have to admit the best way to brood ducks is to have a spare, ready to go! transfer ducks and then clean the dirty one at leisure! I do it daily already! they are what 11 days or so old? hmmmmm They stink after just one day in the lower level for sure! good way to use up the straw I didn't use for the straw bale gardening that's for sure, can you imagine if I woulda kept all 15 of them suckars? OMGAWD!

I also dug a trench from the house all the way down to the pool for a new electric line since the previous owners simply buried a live wire in the ground as my DOGS just showed me last weekend! DOH! STUPID! Like the tubing is so expensive to put it in! People never cease to amaze me and this house is filled with so many stupid things I cant even tell ya! All hooked up and wired in, but its freezing and I don't feel like messing with the pool to start the filter now! lol Tomorrow is another day right?

Chad is taking all my extra chick/chickens to auction, so tomorrow (supposedly) I have to figure out how to get them ready for him, I have this gorgeous Ameraucana x salmon faverolle that I put in the pen "to go", and she kept running back and forth and when I told her to stop it she looked at me agast and I was just heartbroken! So I grabbed the little stinker and put her back in with the serama and told her she better behave and be the best laying hen I ever had! She clucked, shook and ran off like a bat out of heck!
OMG are the dogs o.k?

It's hard to resist that look, hey? LOL Hopefully she will turn out to be a good one.

I like researching stuff. Found some fascinating info already. But I need help... Does anyone know on which day a chick embryo's eyes are developed sufficiently so they can see? I'm serious! LOL Had a lovely discussion about candling eggs last week with some other members after someone said it scares the chick embryo and I was wondering at what stage they can see and would the light from the candling really scare them?

So, the question is: does candling upset/harm the embryo?

OK Quick update. I checked and opened all the eggs earlier. I had two live chicks. I laid them on paper towels. I cant tell one from any of the others now because its doing fine. They both had yolk sacks showing but quickly absorbed them.. but one was almost dead and is very very very weak. I mixed up some sav a chick and have been feeding it about every hour or so with a dropper. I think its getting stronger Its kicking its legs but cant even move its head up yet unless Im holding it. It seems to be liking the dropper but it so close to death that I expect it to be gone each time I go out to check on it. Since I started, Im not giving up until its gone or it llves. I have it in its own box. Its peeping a lot.

I have been successful with several that have died in prior hatches on this hatch. I probably have saved 5 to 7 chicks so far and possibly two turkeys. The first 6 hatched very easily but the last dozen have all been assisted. I lost count of how many I have assisted and how many have lived. Its day three of the hatch. The bator is clean and waiting. I have two clean bators.

On another note, I candled the eggs that spiked and I think I see a lot of veining and some with globs. What do they look like on day 4?

In Sallys article in her sig, it just says to up the humidity so that the air cells don't grow too quickly, so I upped it to 50 because I had loose cells and saddle shaped ones and it worked at keeping them in the normal growth rate. Big buttttt, it also made them awful sticky with lots of gel type gook and I had to help them out at the end because as they zipped and popped the top, the gook dried onto the chicks body and they got stuck. It's a win some, lose some with shipped eggs because of the rough handling by the post.
