thanks, that a relief, i don't have anywhere to put lights unless i can talk my other half into making me another place, already have three big houses and three chicken tractors

, i think asking for one more would be pushing it

Just built my 3rd. 6x6 rooster house. I have community sections. 2 32x64 areas. One will have 8-12 roosters of different breeds. The other area same size will house all the hens. That will be my 4th house. That one will be 6x12. Plus 5 breeding areas that will have some sort of house for 3-4 hens and a rooster when it is time. LOL. All breeds live together. Except my growing pen and house and my Production Reds.Thats only because I got them years ago. Was my first flock.

Hey Everyone! I've been following this thread for quite some time now and finally decided to join in all the posting fun! I just put 23 shipped eggs into lockdown on Tuesday, 8 dark Cornish, 8 Buckeyes, and 7 Exchequer Leghorns... at least 3/4 had saddle air sacs... I seen activity in about 18, and 5 would questionable [couldn't make out anything inside of egg], but I put them in anyways. on day 19 a dark cornish hatched, then 2 buckeyes... 1 buckeye pipped the small end of the shell externally... I started reading up on malpositioned chicks, etc. after reading, I left it alone for awhile. I came back a few hours later to find the other chicks trying to help it out by pulling on the exposed membrane... On day 20 the malpositioned chick was still alive, I can see him inside the egg through the dime sized pip, but the chick couldn't do anything else... so I decided "assist". I didn't think I could open the bator with 5 other pips going on, so I used my prob thermometer to start cracking the shell around the external pip... after several hours on and off of doing this, I was finally able to get that chick out... all from within the bator... (I thought it was cool, and the DC thought it was very cool!, LOL). So, now I have 7 chicks running around and several pips that are external and not where I marked the air cells to be [but where the saddle extended]. These chicks are running all over the place in this bator, and knocking the pips around the place. My Exchequers haven't pipped as of yet [really wanting them] but the buckeyes and dark cornish are doing their thing. Which brings me to a question: It's day 21 today... If the chicks have dried, could I open the bator and take them out? Or will it harm the other pips and non pipped eggs? Plus, today is day 18 for some shipped buff rocks I got as well, so I have to put them on lockdown too... Could I open bator and place them in as well, even though the first lockdown hasn't finished yet??? I can't leave them in their current bator because I have a staggered incubation of some shipped olive eggers in there as well that aren't quite at day 7!

Thanks for your anticipated advise on my little dilemma...

Well I decided to end the sitting of the Broody hen on day 23. I put her in a pen and went to get the eggs to check them and they were chirping so I put her back.

Took both my Pekins yesterday off there nests. TERRIBLE!! Rotten eggs and all went in the trash. They say Pekins aren't very good mothers. I see why. They can't even hatch.

Yesterday went to add some pine shavings to my 2 week old Heritage Delawares outside. Found one dead. That one never looked right from the start. Surprised it lasted this long. Was going to cull it back then but decided to give it a chance. It's legs never looked right. They were like tooth picks. Always sleeping , had a hard time moving around. Even the color wasn't right with it's legs. Think it just never formed right. They did sent 26 an extra one. So that was my extra.

how will you keep them from fighting? mine, unless raised together as peeps, fight, even then sometimes fight, would love to have all the roos together until i wanted fertile eggs, all the hens could run together too, but would have to rabbitt proof the runs, we have a little dwarf lop, he slides into the runs and fights with the roos, the hens run but its the funniest thing to watch him and the roo both jumping up into the air at each other

Actually, the more roos you have together the better. They seem to fight more when there is only 2-3 roos together. They maybe some scrapping but nothing dangerous. My hens fight more than roos do. LOL. After you get them out of the breeder pens they seem to be a bit cocky. HAHAHAHA. But they settle down. As long as they don't kill each other.
