Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

Hey guys, I have found myself in a predicament. My silkie, Cappa, went full-blown broody one week ago while I was in Ohio. I just switched out her eggs for fertile ones yesterday, in which she is currently sitting on. She built her nest UNDERNEATH the nesting boxes in some hay. I want to move her nest to a safer location where she can hatch and raise her eggs for the first week on her own since I will be away when her eggs hatch... And then, also, she also got my mallard to go broody on another batch of already fertile eggs- except they are chicken eggs.. I need to move her to a safer location too, and I really wanted to switch her eggs for fertile duck eggs... Can anyone help me with this???

Please help. I posted in the emergency thread. One person didn`t really say much but the day doesn`t matter. Now someone else has said they are shrink wrapped. I am so upset. I have been posting about this for ages.

Any advice please? coppied and pasted thread.

I have some bantam eggs in a home made incubator. It is now day 25, but last night 4 of the chicks internally pipped. Oh heck. You can tell I am new to this.

My humidity meter had died. Anyway, quickly put in a new one, just a probe, and the humidity was very low. I had to open the incubator to put in a wet cloth soaked in warm water, so now it is around 60%. I just can`t get it any higher. Last night I could hear some peeping, but that hasn`t happened for hours. How long is the longest you have waited for an outside pip?

Get a qtip with warm water and dampen the membrane. Slowly start peeling it back. If you see blood stop for a while then try again. It will take some time to do but worth it. Then niceand warm once chick is out. Do NOT pull off the umbilical cord. Let that dry off and fall off. In other words the chick should still be attached to the shell just out of it. I hope this helps. That's how I have assisted a few times now and chicks are all healthy

Any idea how long the Mallard's been sitting? Maybe you could put those eggs in an incubator and give her some duck eggs to hatch? Moving a broody is tricky, I warn you, but if you need to give it a try. Maybe moving her in the evening when she's sleepy will help.

Have you look at Sally's assist article?

https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching

Candle and tap the eggs to see if they're still viable and if you see/hear them create an artificial pip and proceed as Waffle suggested. Sally put loads of pics in the article for reference, so have a look there.

My baby rabbit just died. I knew he would but still very upset :,0(

Thanks Sumi. Read it now. I should have done something hours ago, but I didn`t want to interfere.
