I need help! When looking at one cream legbar egg that pipped, I noticed another was actually further along but pipped at the small end that was half way down in the egg carton I incubate and hatch in. I took it out quickly and peeled back the membrane around it's face (no blood and it seems healthy) then put it back in the bator laying down on it's side with face upward. I then put some hot water in the bator to get the humidity back up. I said I wasn't going to open the bator until the hatch was done but darn it, that chick could have drowned or just not been able to zip out. Did I do right by laying it down on it's side? And do you think the other eggs will be okay including the other externally pipped egg? What else should I do?

I have a section on malposition in the assist article, even though its a low pip not always means its upsidedown, HOWEVER I am finding these eggs are usually the first pippers, lower dip pippers and malpositioned, BUT it means that you make sure there is no fluid at the pip and LET THEM REST and do their thing! If when the marjority is hatching (NOT RESTING, ZIPPING) then assist and check on her, ANY BLOOD ANY RED VESELS let her alone!


A NOTE TO EVERYONE!
I AM ALWAYS OPENING MY BATOR DURING HATCHING! And I know a lot you experienced do as well.
KEEP A MISTER WITH DISTILLED WATER IN IT NEAR THE BATOR, ITS NOT A BIG DEAL I PROMISE!
Just DONT MIST THE EGGS OR GET DRIPS ON THEIR PIP HOLES!
ITS not a big deal if you know how to raise it!

REMEMBER INSTANT HUMIDITY BY SURFACE AREA!
A hen has NO mister or water nor does she hatch her eggs in a container that holds humidity, but I have wondered if anyone ever set a hygro under a broody and taken readings? I know from lifting them they are sweaty hot messes!

OZ I wonder if there is a Uni Abstract on that somewhere! I am curious! I do have a broody hen but she is visions, I will need a extend arm to get it under her! LMAO!

relative humidity 90%

bator humidity at 8 am 51%

2kg white rice added to bator at 11 am

humidity at 5pm 56%

i am wondering if rice should be heated for 30 mins to remove any moisture in it first

interesting, where was the rice stored? it may have already collected a bunch of moisture!

Oh this heat twice now I've woken in the morning to see the heat in the bator at 104 because some fool turns of my air conditioner hope the duck and chick eggs are ok to soon to tell

I forget you don't have a thermostat in the bator? I would have too much stress without one.

That is very good to know bator and humidity. I wonder if loss of humidity/possible shrink-wrap varies from bator type to type? I have a LG still air bator and I've learn to only lift it as high as I need to so some humidity stays trapped in the top and have water I've heated in the micro there to put on paper towel to instantly rehumidify as I close it.

My buff Orpington would stay in there and just ride as the door opened and closed!!! Lol. My barred Rock would jump up though.

I took the top (wrong end top) off the shell off the wrong end pipped egg and there was minimal blood like a normal hatch would have. I looked in and saw it had not completely absorbed the yolk so I wrapped the egg in a warm moisture paper towel and placed the whole thing in a bowl so it can rest and continue absorbing in peace. I hope it will make it, it seems strong but definitely resting now.

I have an OE out and walking the floor of the bator with another cream legbar zipped and resting. There's another external pip on an OE. I'm hoping one of the AMs will pip soon!!!!
