Boy...8 hens no roo? BUM---MMMMER!! Did you ever have one ?
I have one young cockrel & 3 hens
LOVE my Light Brahma hens best of all my chickens. They are spoiled too
Come up and whine for treats LOVE LOVE white bread....

I Had a roo Georgie for a while .... raised him from an egg..At maybe 6 months old he sadly dropped dead this spring just when he was getting to be aggressive enough not to let the girls overwhelm him,(Some took exception to him trying to jump them and ran him off...young whipper snapper!)
Got chicks from eggs the girls layed after he died though for 4 maybe even 6 weeks .....not one fertile egg before he died ...like he knew he was going.
Sold the chicks, all but Georgie 2, and hes from another batch of eggs from the same breeder so he wouldnt have the same genes as the girls.

Yep had to start over when i couldnt find another roo any place to buy.
PPl must hang on to their Light Brahmas I NEVER see them for sale. Finally gave up and hatch one.
Eggs from BIG DAWG on here. Nice chickens

Oh and based on your recommendation - I will let the boys see me candle 1 or 2 only and then wait till day 10. Mostly because I promised them. I was looking at this thread again too https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...g-candling-pics-progression-though-incubation and I can see how it would be so much more obvious telling a dud from a viable egg at 10 days or even 12 days. How many days in do you begin worrying about the "exploding egg" if one is non-fertile?
Myself if i open the bator and smell an odd sort of bad or very eggy smell i smell all the eggs one at a time and alway come up with one that is WHEW!!! Remove it.... then all is well.Smells ok then
.I dont know this as a fact but i would think it would have to be a stinker before it would explode
I havent had it happen
I leave almost everything in but totally clear til day 21 or at least day 17. My eggs are all tan or blue. sort of hard to see into.
Rather not throw out a mistaken -for -bad ... good egg than worry about the exploding one but thats just me. If one explodes on me i might change my mind!

Well. I bought 4 chicken tractors or pens from a guy yesterday and he is going to deliver them. They are bigger than normal and one is roofed with cedar shake and one is made out of cedar. He built them all himself. Im going to paint a couple of them to make them match my barn. I will have places for all my chicks and for three different breeds. Then I will let my Buff Orpingtons have the run of the place. I have more of them than anything.

I have 5 goats now. I just finished putting up over 1000' of fence and they have a few acres of Bermuda grass. The great thing about goats is they prefer the weeds. LOL. They have been attacking my weeds all evening. We are freezing milk and have a couple gallons already. We are living healthy and trying to get away from hormone based foods. We will never have to buy any more milk.

O yea. I had 8 eggs and 7 hatched as of the last time I looked this morning.

What else. IM WORE OUT!!!
Sounds like you are set with coops and very busy!! But Is one coop cedar inside or just the roof? Some say (i dont know this as fact) cedar will harm the chickens.Poison or something for them Thing is cedar is bug proof so nice in that way....Maybe keep an eye out on how the chooks seem after in it a day or so in case..

ive never had one of my own eggs explode but i have had it happen when someone asked me to hatch some for them. it is a mess to clean up and not something i care to go through again. you will notice a stink first, and i haven't had one explode before candling on day 10. if your afraid of the exploding egg, make sure you get the eggs before a hen sets on them. that way you dont have a quitter that matches your day 10 embryo size.

OK so i have a few questions and i thought here would be the best place to ask.
I had 6 eggs go in to lock down. One didn't fully develope. (boy did that egg stink when i opened it)
my cream leg bar egg. (which was absolutly huge) Piped internally (in the middle) and then died. I think it was too big to move completely. My other basque egg was in a bad position and it died before pipping. It looked a little squishy too. It was a big chick. My other basque hatched perfectly. I have a crele pen and a wellsummer that are hatching now. I heard cheeps and opened up the area by the air cell. saw the internal pip and that they still were breathing and had some blood in the veins still so i stopped and put them back in to wait. These eggs were all shipped and it was hot out. I started out with 15. Had a lot of clears and almost as many blood rings (the one box had 3 broken eggs in it). My hummidity stayed at 40-50% I had good weight loss on all eggs. My temp was stable at 102 at the top of the eggs. (it's a still air) and they were in a turner. So.... Is it just a bad hatch due to shipped eggs that were miss handled/ heat or could i have done something better?

Oh and I am in LOVE with the little basque chick. it's LOUD but SO cuddly. It feel asleep curled up under my chin. :)

Had to share for those not hooked up with me on FB! Look how big the pups are getting!! we had a photo shoot at 3 weeks, next up on wed 4 weeks shoot!

are you sure the air cells were ok? 40-50 for duration sounds like a high number, I know oz has not choice to hatch high humidity, but it may be why the bigger ones didn't make it. And I have fans in all models so I am not sure what to tell you as far as the heat. you move the eggs around in the bator?

yep, i switched there positions every other day. All the air cells were horrible. Most were saddle shaped and some never re-attached.
