i agree with oz, i had a chick with a significant head injury, she miraculously survived. Keep it clean! Don't let anyone (chicken) else near her and with all the hands on care you give her she will be that much friendlier

HELP Hope has a big gash in the top of her head and  we can no longer afford to take her to emergency room. there is no skin left and I can see her skull which does not seem to be broken. My family keeps encouraging me she will live, but I am highly doubtful because I think she is just in shock and that is why she is acting normal. My mom is going to get some antibiotics for her, but I was wondering if I could give her some home painkillers aka: acetaminophen (sp) some way 'cause we are dirt poor. I really don't want my Hope to die, but it might happen anyway. I am barely typing right now. My mom said to clean it with ivory soap and water, but I want to know your opinions. Please help.

So, I am testing my LG still air bator today that I will be using as a separate hatcher for my staggered hatch. What is the ideal temp and humidity for hatching only in a still air bator? Also I read to get a chamois and wet that for better surface area/control for humidity. I did but it smelled like hot leather and chemicals so I pulled it out. I replaced it with a folded piece of woven hemp cloth which hold a ton of water and has lots of surface area. Sound good?
I use a ShamWow and its not leather its some kinda other fibers.

on another note i put a dozen eggs in my incubator last night, praying for a good hatch rate my last(and first) was a zero, but they were all my own eggs that i was trying after my roo died very suddenly. these are from a friend and some are auracana ee's others are polish crested (supposedly)

OK, so I broke out the super bright flashlight and just candled the 14 shipped Welsummer eggs (Day 8) and 5 were duds - 3 scrambled and 2 not fertile. But the others all look to be developing well so far. I candled all 24 of my barnyard mix (day 11) and 2 had blood rings (confirmed by eggtopsy) and 2 were non-fertile. When I say non-fertile I think that is the right term as there was no development at all. I numbered everyone and put theme back in leaving the corners empty as I've heard that is where there tends to be the most fluctuation in temps.
When eggs are shipped its extremely hard to call a NON fertile egg, you know those white spot of strings in your eggs when you break them in a frying pan? Those are the chalaza that hold the yolk in the egg, shipping can tear them and in turn you will see nothing in the egg.

One SLW out on it's own! So cute! It hatched very early but zipped right along my pencil line!

Quote: remind me via PM please!

I am sending out a lot of "what the hens lay" a few days, example, serama eggs and whatever I get from the WFS mix pen with WFS, black polish, and spitz hens.

sooner or later I need to figure out if I will keep my WFS and sell the few spitz I have so I can have a pure WFS pen

Quote: i will have to try them, i didnt realize they were such fast reproducers when i started them so i have a good group of layers now. btw, i seen your list of breeds, if there is anything on my list that you cant find closer to you; let me know. i'll get you fixed up. for some reason when i ship eggs that far (past the mississippi) they dont hatch well.

None of the eggs I set hatch well. Its part of shipping them all the way accross the Pacific as well.

Although local eggs do better, sometimes they just cant be found.

I am looking for good old fashioned Black Australorps and White Jersey Giants.
