BlackBetty had only one chick with her at lockup, she turned and the other was dead stuck in her feathers crushed.

I took the other chick from her put in the brooder with the others she almost murdered and threw her back in the dungeon with the roo and the other broody. May the best CHICKEN WIN! I am so MAD, not even upset, just MAD and of course Harmony had to come in when I was pulling the darn thing out of her backside! RIP little mother natures chick I DO NOT LIKE BROODIES! and after the other cochin hatches her marans I am taking them, ALL OF THEM!

I know this is late (waaaayyyy late), but I just read it. You made me think of the lady posting pics of her lost Chihuahua puppy, "Lost Puppy" flyers. Someone took a pic of her doing it, and she was so obese, that she never even knew the puppy was stuck between her backside's cheeks, still alive, but stuck, where she had sat on it.

The chick I mentioned this morning that had pipped it's shell last night had quit doing anything. And when I took it out to check on it, the membrane had hardened over the chicks mouth. So I peeled it off and a little more to make sure it would be able to get out. It started panting! I hope it will be ok!

If the chick has pipped then the bacitracin will not effect air exchange.

Yes, in this case, the chick had not pipped and I used the bacitracin to see if there was a place that I could pip for it since it was shrink wrapped, but there were so many active blood vessels that I couldn't risk it. In that case, the bacitracin or rather the petrolatum base of the bacitracin blocked air exchange. I can't remember why I had opened up the egg, I think I thought that the chick was actually dead and I wanted to do an eggtopsy, but then it moved and you know the rest.

I switched to the aloe juice after that because I figured that it helps to have some permeability through the membrane for optimal O2 sat. since their lungs are still not fully formed when they first pip. This is just a guess since I can't seem to fit a finger clip on a chick that's still in an egg.

I agree with your opinion on broodies Sally, I had one kill a chick and go after a second chick. When I found the second chick hiding under her, it was bleeding from its ears and nose. It survived after I took it away and drop kicked the hen out of the coop, but it had a hematoma in its sinuses for the longest time and had to mouth breathe.

Of course, as it turns out, its a boy and I'll end up eating him in a few months anyway. Oh well.

ok, today started out as a crappy day. then i really stepped in it and fell in up to my neck. then it ended well.

i fell asleep last night with my computer on my lap... trying to find out what is wrong with a chicken's legs for someone else. i never thought i would say this, and it kind of ticks me off at myself.

i was woken up by my brother, his help had called in sick and he needed me to run his route (at 6 am).

my truck is loaded with feed, so i asked my DW to take me to his house.... she does not wake up well, if you have ever seen the movie "throw momma from the train", well she is a lot like momma at 6 am.

i put water in the truck, checked the toilet paper and smell good levels, and took off for a day of cleaning porta potties. talk about a crappy day. 4 hose jams, 230 miles with no one to talk to and no radio. on the stop before the furthest stop away the truck started leaking diesel fuel, it was dripping down the motor and the fumes were coming into the cab. i found a parts store and bought a hose clamp a pair of pliers and a screw driver and fixed the leak, after i had a huge headache from the fumes.

on the way back i had a stop and an amish friend's house, this spring i had given him my golden sebrites because i wasn't having any luck with them. i had a $75 in just the pair, and i really hated to see them go. when i pulled in he asked me if i wanted to see them, so i went back to look at them. walking back he told me he hadn't had much luck with them either. he had tried putting her eggs under a broody hen and they kept quitting near hatch time - same problem i was having with the incubator. finally she sat on 3 eggs and hatched all 3. about 6 weeks later he put her and the chicks back with the rooster, she was starting to lay again. well the rooster killed 2 of the chicks. he said he was working on another project, and if i wanted them back to take them; he was just planning on putting them in a mixed run. so i took them back, their feathers are a little ruffled from the trip ill try to get pics tomorrow of the little one, i am pretty sure its a pullet. they are hen feathered though so im not sure just yet. anyways, here is an old pic of the rooster, the hen is hiding in the back.:

he is so tiny, the wire behind him is spaced weird, about 1 1/2 inches so it makes him look taller.

my broody that was sitting on the birthday candle wax repaired egg is done and off her nest with 100% hatch rate. Waiting for my other broody to finish up. Letting everyone out later after the dew dries up to get a good chick count and will check the rest of her eggs. I love broodies. I know some of you don't have good luck with them but all I have to say is you need some orp broodies to change your mind. (I do have one girl that is a horrible broody and she won't ever get the chance again so they are not all perfect but pretty close

)

I had four unsuccessful broody attempts all dif hens, NO WAY will I do it again, No more feeling sorry for a hen, in the kennel they go! Frustrating to say the least!
