I remember the meltdown when I used to live in the Catskills. It went from hard-packed icy snow to mud-up-to-your-knees in a matter of days. I so don't miss that. I'll take mosquitoes in December over sub-zero weather any day. I'd almost welcome the prospect of dengue fever over the cold.

I hate the cold too. I am a hermit until March.
Huge giant limb is mostly removed. We can at least get out one gate. The other two are frozen solid. To top all that fun off I think the stomach bug has hit this house. Little guy is miserable. Please pray it doesn't spread. I can't handle throw up hardly anytime but really right now is not good.

Below zero temperatures are never fun, but I like the 4 seasons.

I was out snowmobiling for 4 hours today. It's a reminder that this cold white stuff can be enjoyable.

I'm sorry!!

Were they shipped eggs? I've had the extra fluid happen with a lot of my shipped eggs. As to the "ripped, bloody area" I have lost a couple during hatch when they pipped too low and hit a major blood vessel. My thinking was that the chicks grew too big inside the egg, and were not able to get into the correct position for hatch.
Yes, they were shipped eggs, all the Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas had detached air cells when they arrived. I incubated them upright for the first 18 days, then laid them on their side for hatch. I believe laying on the side caused the air cell to rip in those that were detached.

The Ameraucana eggs are still in the incubator because I cant give up. The solid dark blue shelled egg I can't see in, it appears dark throughout with a solid line at the air cell and no clear area at the bottom (yolk), so I'm leaving it in (d23). Doesn't smell.

The 2 light blue shelled eggs: arrived detatched, successfully re-healed by d18 and laid on their side for hatch. Air cell ripped in both these eggs, the rip appears to have killed 1, and the other ripped 1 now has a 2nd air cell. I wish I could take good candling pictures, I keep trying but they turn out terrible you can't see anything.

This egg is so strange. It has blood vessels in it that are still red. I think they should be brown if it were dead?? It also appears that there is a 2nd air cell, in the egg with the red veins. It moved down to the lower part of the egg and it is re-sealed, when I rotate it does not move. Have you ever heard of this? Should I stop incubating this egg?

uggggg Luke is still feeling bad and started with fever last night, I will assume its NOT the funnel cake at this point :( I hope it doesnt spread for either of us, and so close to holiday. Praying they both get well fast.

I've never had a membrane "rip" They've all been pretty tough. Are they wiggling at all? You could try the test where you put them in a little bowl of water. I think the instructions are in Sally's hatching 101 article. That way you would know for sure if they are alive or not. I hate the wait. Hang in there!!

This is a paste but please read the entire article to help understand everything that is going on in there...

If the majority of your chicks have hatched or
its past day 21 (for Chicken eggs), it's time to....
CANDLE & Tap!

Candle and look for an internal pip. Pencil mark the air cell.

Below is what an internal pip it looks like.
The beak is thrust through the inner membrane into the air cell.

Tap with your fingernail GENTLY on the air cell and hold to your ear, Can you hear a peep?

**IF** YOU DO NOT HAVE AN INTERNAL PIP AND YOU CAN’T HEAR CHIRPING and but you do SEE MOVEMENT, place that egg BACK in the incubator and WAIT, this EGG DOES NOT need assisting at this point!

**IF** however YOU DO NOT HAVE AN INTERNAL PIP AND YOU CAN’T HEAR CHIRPING and YOU DO NOT see MOVEMENT please proceed to The Float Test ~ Checking Egg Viability. Give Eggs A Full 24 Hrs Overdue Before Float Testing ONLY AFTER CANDLING and NO Internal pips and NO internal MOVEMENT or CHIRPING! This procedure takes very little equipment Or time to do and Is Easy To Perform. If your egg is still viable, place back in the bator and wait! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/383525/float-testing-checking-egg-viability-for-late-or-overdue-hatching
