Sally I'm so afraid of building my own. One cause I would have to do it myself and have no clue how and other is it going to cost me more than just buying one. Image go through all and spend and it not working. So afraid yet will love to do. How much have you spend already and is this your first or you just adding more incubators? Sorry I'm so curious. Been following your post on it for weeks

Dolfi did you check tracking on the eggies? where they at?

MKK did you find any eggs! You know the Easter Hatch a long is soon, maybe you should wait for that!
wink.png
or is there enough time in between? when is easter??? and dont say Sunday!!
lau.gif
Nope, still looking. Yeah maybe I'll do that... NOPE I CAN'T WAIT! f I did do that I would start on March 30th because Easter is on April 20th. Is that right?

Oh Sally, how do you make a joke out of everything???

Hopefully I can get some Wyandotte eggs from a local breeder and some Faverolles from my own birds. The only problem is that I only have a little Brinsea Mini Advanced and it can only take seven eggs at a time. I might have to use a friend's incubator if I want to do both at the same time.

Okay what is she hatching? =)
seven eggs! and you havent made your own incubator yet! Both breeds sound like a good plan, and local eggs you should get a great hatch rate too!
Yeah, teach me how! LOL Yuppers, I am excited.

The key to incubating is Patience my friend.... Wax on Wax off

and a few other important things like calibration so you have spot on temps and not using humidity as a number but a tool for weight loss, then there is ventilation and turning and well you know the ropes my friend!

Okay putting the wax onto my face right now.

I lay all my eggs down for hatch, I had two malpositions in one hatch early on, most likely because the chick couldn't turn to pip correctly. What happens when malpositioned in cartons is that the pips are next to the carton below the egg, I cannot see them to make sure they are free of liquids, but I cannot be certain they are getting air needed. Not that I will blame the death of the malpositioned chick on that alone, but please read what I also added to the hatching 101 article pasted below......

There are tons of people who do hatch in cartons, but after reading and reading clinical studies and abstracts there are reasons big hatcheries lay eggs for hatching.... KEEPING in mind, our eggs that are shipped are NOT perfect conditioned eggs for hatching, so you will have to go with your best judgement taking into account the info you have learned, if at any time you have a saddle shaped air cell or a watery egg you also have to judge how is best to set the egg for hatching, example can you tell for sure which side of the saddle the lowest dip will be? Is there fluid? you wouldnt want to set the egg for hatching with the probably pip area so that water flows into that area. I know that didnt sound like much help but you have the egg in front of you and without pics and actually physically examining myself, you will have to do that part with the help of what we set forth for you..... I wish you luck! How many eggs are going into lockdown? breeds? and out of curiosity how far did the eggs travel?

See how that air cell is beginning to dip more to one side and if you lay the egg down it will roll into the hatching position. I set my eggs with lowest dip in the aircell up. This position for hatching is good so the chick is able to turn into position and I can easily see my pips too! Day 18 laying horizontal for actual hatching helps a chick hatch 1-2 hours earlier. I lay my eggs down LOWEST DIP of the AIRCELL UP! This is the normal and most likely hatching position and the chick will break through or Internally pip and externally pip in that probable area. See the image below with the x, x being lowest dip in air cell and probably pip area/s.

The eggs came from Kentucky to florida, took from a Saturday ship day, and did not receive them until Wednesday. :barnie They are a mixture of brahma eggs. Two of the saddle shaped eggs look a little runny when I candled them on day 14. I traced along their air cells, the best I could to get a better idea of what I would be dealing with. I candled them last night, day 16, and could only see movement in about 10 of the 20 eggs left of 30. The others were just too dark to really see anything anymore.

Ignore the temp/hydro reading, it has been inaccurate. I have been running the incubator dry at 30-35%, with weight losses of 11-14.5% as of last night, day 16. The temp has been consistently at 100.0F. Maybe you will be able to tell from the photo what the air cells are like. Would appreciate any advice. This is only my third time hatching shipped eggs, or any eggs for that matter. I am new to chickens as of April of last year as well, and am totally a chicken fanatic already! Love my chicks!! :love
