Fox proofing

Agreed - don't use chicken wire. Hardware cloth can either be buried or laid down flat on the ground a foot or more out. If you lay it down on the ground you can cover it with dirt, mulch, or gravel (not pavers/large stones as this defeats the purpose) or you can stake it and let the grass grow through it.

I didnt bury mine necessarily. I attached 2 foot skirt of hardware cloth to the wood foundation along the entire coop and run with screws and washers and then did the nice white chipped marble landscape rock on top and then flower boxes on top of that. I live in New England so we have incredibly rocky clay dirt digging is a nightmare here so a fox or other digging predator would have to start 3.5 ft out from the chicken coop and dig a 3-ft tunnel to get in which I guess if something's motivated enough they may do but for the same reason it's hard for me to get a post holer through it it's hard for the animals to dig that much too atleast in ome night where i wouldn't notice before they made it in, so for at least my soil conditions the non-buried skirt with the landscape rock on top works really well
