Lol!

She's more like a Shetland pony... Acts like one too!

She's gorgeous.

oz, anyone have access to this pdf? http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/com/87/5/997/

Made a film analysis of the hatching movements of White Leghorn chicks placed in transparent glass "eggshells." During every hatching burst, each of the limbs first extended, then flexed beyond the original resting point, and finally extended again to the original resting point (as seen from the body). This suggests that all 4 limbs helped to hold the body of the embryo tightly in place inside the egg during a cracking phase, enabling the beak to perform the actual cracking of the shell. Subsequently during a turning phase, the limbs contributed to rotation of the embryo in the eggshell, bringing the animal in the right position for further breaking the shell during the next burst. The effective forces against the shell, leading to rotation of the animal in the egg, were probably performed by (a) the right leg during its flexion, (b) the right wing during its flexion, and (c) the left wing during its re-extension.

Wow. I'd love to see that.

Seriously!!! OH geeeezums!

Darn it. I wanted to keep reading, but it only lets you see the first page.

I wonder if it's accurate? I don't think I've ever heard anything about hatching accidental rumpless birds from shipped eggs before.

He has pooped a couple of times already. Only thing that concerns me now, is he is sleeping standing up with his head hanging down. The other chicks seem to sleep laying down with their head stretched out. Maybe it's because he is in the incubator without all the nice fluffy bedding?
I have fresh ones do that in the brooder. They get tired and sleep where they are at if it is warm. I have had them fall asleep with their head in the food.

I thought rumpless was genetic.

We tried putting him with the others this am, and the other chicks kept pecking at the scabbed area. It is dried out, even has a tiny piece of egg shell stuck to it that I couldn't get off. You don't think the other chicks will injure him? Right now he's in the incubator with food, water and one of my daughter's stuffed toys to snuggle with.

So I went ahead and gave them all their mareks vaccines. I think they were so traumatized, that they didn't noticed that there was a new addition. So far he is much happier in withe brooder with the other chicks. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Okay so I finally weighed and candled the 14 English Orpington's tonight that were shipped to me. I almost couldn't believe my eyes but ALL 14 of them had PERFECT air cells! All in the fat end. All were totally intact!!

What are the chances of that?! Is that more common than I maybe thought?? I was not expecting that at all. So I have placed them back into pulp cartons (no tops on the cartons), small holes in the bottom of the cartons and I have them in my laundry room tilted with a book under one end. I re-read parts of the Hatching 101 and I saw where it said if the air cells are normal then to treat the egg like a normal one. So I hope what I did was okay by tilting them. So in the morning I will put the book under the opposite end then?

Tomorrow I have Salmon Faverolle eggs coming! Then Friday I have Wheaten Ameraucana's, Marans and Olive Eggers!! EEEEEEK! Now if only I could get so lucky to have good air cells in those too. I'm thinking I better go knock on some wood :)

Not having the luxury of any place in our farm below eighty degrees during the day, that is the temp I store eggs at.

They get dated and sat in a tray in a room with a good breeze. I don't turn them.

We set once a week now with 85~97% hatch rates. The oldest eggs are closer to 70 % while the fresher eggs are 100%.

CocoBeach had it's sanitary inspection today. We will have our municipal permits to sell poultry on Monday.

We still need the final federal permit so we can get a tax id number and pay sales tax.
