Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

Oh boy where do I start.

Oz: Thanks so much for the info. My local mill sells bulk fish meal and I am going to look into it. I have been using something from Horse.com called horse manna and it does supply the selenium and the biotin. You just have to grind it up a little or it ends up being ignored amongst the other pellets. But I don't powder it because then it ends up as powder at the bottom of the dishes. I think that all of my hatch problems have been nutritional and today is the topper- I have had six silkie eggs in the hatcher for lockdown and today is their due date. Usually I have chicks hatching early if anything and I expected to be woken up this morning by chirping but I wasn't. I just candled and I only see movement in one where there was great movement three days ago. Air sacs look perfect and everything looks perfectly formed. but they don't look even close to pipping. The two things I notice is that there is a lot of fluid in the eggs still and that the blood vessels are starting to break down. According to what i remember from that list of vitamin deficiencies and resulting hatch/development problems that someone had posted a while back (wish I could find that post but I just cant find it), it definitely seems nutritional. The shipped faverolles that I have hatching are doing perfectly, no problems but my own egg hatchability has been going downhill very quickly. It will be interesting to see how things change since I've added the supplement and since I've been giving them yolk from my free rangers (they like it poached, not fried).

I raised free-range pigs once and they were no more messy than a couple of geese. They did eat just about anything- including recently deceased chickens if I didn't get to them fast enough- which was super grotty.

Scooter: Chickens are omnivorous by nature and when allowed to free range they will eat all manner of seeds, bugs, critters and herbs to make up a complete diet which wont need to be supplemented. That is why I am supplementing my penned up and obviously deficient breeders with eggs from my free rangers.

Sally: What about Tolbunt Polish or those Middle-Eastern black faverolles that aren't called faverolles but I can't remember what they are called. I could breed vicariously through you.

This table that Kathy linked me to was really cool so I'm posting it for everyone.

Sally, you should switch to muscovies: no quacking and they taste better than fillet mignon. Plus they really don't get as messy as regular ducks with the whole water thing and all.

Offer is still on the table for Sally,
Muscovy eggs or ducklings (french white variety)
All she needs to do is send someone to pick them up.

Sally, I always have extra males if your intent is just for taste.

dont forget to let us know how hatch goes with the favs

no Tolbunt, I hatched some and gave them to my friend sarah to breed, I adore her. and no clue what favs your talking about. I wanted HarmonyAnn to work with more frizzles and she really likes the colors I mentioned.

I think I will steer away this time

Quote: your awesome as usual Wing,.... Wing is correct, if I would do any I would go with her white scovy for my Dad, for eats but he talks big and never puts up a pen because he has more critter issues than I do for some reason. Could be all my dogs lol I would raise some for him but I cant ever please him so not sure it would work out in the end!

We have been so swamped I dont think I even mentioned that we renewed our NPIP already and the blood draw went terrific, except serama, I cant imagine doing quail or buttons no less! OMGERDDDD good to go until 9-2015! YAYA
okay, so what chick's do you have for me? I just had a terrible hatch (totally my fault for being too busy, and just letting it go) only one hatched, a rhodebar...it was a boy so since it hatched with some of the yolk outside of its body (it was closing up and I believe eventually it was going to dry up and fall off), I euthanized him. :( Very sad :(

I want a new breed of chicken to work with, suggestions? I am tired of looking online and reading. The White Faced are sold, and I cant find the white/buff polish for HarmonyAnn

no no no! You NEED French whites! They are beautiful works of art, Sally! And they are fly vacuum cleaners. They don't make noise, and they roost at night. Really they are more like giant chickens that need a big water bowl.
Its called an Azerbaijan Mara I think you might actually have to GO to Azerbaijan in order to get your breeding stock though:confused:
Okay, yes...I met some people from there before...it's near Turkey. It's BEAUTIFUL place. We should all go! Guys...I think I need to move...imagine all the cool chickens! Do you think they could be as friendly as our domestic chickens? Or do you think they are more wily? Maybe I can get a grant or something for me to go and study the psychology of chickens all over the world......do you think they'd buy it? You know...how the culture of the people affects the culture of the chickens.
