Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

Okay, this isn't a shipped egg, unless you count a mile's drive down the street, and it isn't in an incubator, it's under a broody hen. But you all have done a lot of research on incubating eggs so here goes:

My broody was on three eggs, one of her own and two from the egg lady down the street. I told you about the one I dropped while candling it . . . I'm still feeling so awful about that. The wee chick-to-be was developing. (Insert tears here.)

The second farm egg has cracks in it. There is a small somewhat circular area, about half the size of a dime, that has been pushed in, with cracks up to an inch long radiating away from it. As far as I can tell, the cracks do not penetrate to the egg's membrane.

I don't know what to do -- I'm still feeling guilty about the one I dropped, and I'm hoping to preserve this one's shell long enough for it to have a chance to hatch.

I spread a thin layer of nontoxic white glue over the cracks, then gently spread a patch of cloth tape from a first aid kit over the area, then tucked it back under the hen.

Do you think there's any chance at all of the egg making it to hatch? I'm hoping to be there if/when it pips, so I can monitor if the patched area is holding in the chick.

Thanks for any advice.

Edited to add: it's about day 14.

I have read that nail polish and wax work, sounds bad in your situation. the hen may just throw it out.... my CONSERNS ARE....

humidity and it being able to dry out fast,
of course the hen is an issue,
and where you fixed it up and if it will be able to get out of the shell on its own.

Are you not able to hatch this one by yourself in a bator? sorry to hear this... hens know what bad and good eggs are : (

THEY are ALIVE!!! at least 6 or 7 of the BCMxComets!!! I just candled because the blue silkie "Halo" went into lockdown! I see eyes on a small curvey body, at least I think, its too dark to see veining but I now see eyes! Hear me EYES!!!! So they must be fertile and only started just before I picked them up!! his hens were probably waiting to set on them until they collected more eggs in the nest!!! !!

HALO looks GREAT and is now in lockdown!! yay he made it to lockdown!! Go Halo Go!!

I am sooooo eggsited!!! I moved them to the front of the bator so I can still "move" them with a straw during lockdown of the silk!!! If they hatch I KNOW they will be so PRETTY!!! I will assume they are on day 7 or eight!!! I love them already he he he My hubby is going to THROW me out soon!!

Coincidentally I bought a used still-air Little Giant yesterday but had not planned to use it until next spring, as I'm planning to upgrade it on my own (fan, turner, humidity monitor). The broody is still sitting faithfully on the eggs -- I just want to give it a chance if there is a chance. If Mama Hen kicks it out, I'll throw it out. If it manages to pip, I'm hoping the patch is out of the way of the zip line. Not sure what I'd be able to do if it isn't.

Do you think it would have a better chance in the incubator?

Of course, the hen may already have rejected it while I type!

Thanks! They are the best breed ever!!

Thats a hard call, I would probably do the same as you, keep with the hen at this point at least until day 18. that gives you some time maybe, to think it over and get the bator ready just in case you change your mind and do them in the bator at lockdown... whats the weather been like with you?

Good idea, thanks!

High 60s to low 70s daytime, low 40s nighttime. Hen seems only to leave the nest for under 5 minutes when I first open the coop (at least as far as I can tell). She is dedicated!
