did anyone else put eggs in there incubator today

I also tried to candle a few last night. Either I have no idea what I'm supposed to be looking for, or it was too early. A combination of both, I'm sure.

My temps were holding perfectly between 99 and 100. I opened the incubator last night to release some humidity (was up over 70%).
Ever since my temps have been over 100 (but my humidity is in the 40% range now). I have no idea how I can open the window long enough to drop my humidity and candle a few eggs and my temps got all screwed up.
But I'm not stressing.

I resolve to not open it again until day 7 for our official candling.

In the interest of full disclosure the eggs I was dying to candle are bantam salmon faverolle and they are a creamy tinted color and very easy to candle! (it is kinda like cheating

Well thanks for that disclosure.
Cheater cheater mceater! LOL

I guess that explains why you were seeing veining and I was seeing nothing???? ;-)

I did it again last night... I have a problem....

How'd it go? How many of your eggs are developing?
PS I'm so getting Bantums next time just so I can candle obsessively. I'm soooo jealous of you right now!

day 5, I just candled again,(couldnt wait), I only candled 5, and saw veins in 2. I am relieved, now I know at least something is going on. whew! one had a displaced air cell(no veining) I wonder if that ones a gonner.

Oh Geez....I hope they are nice and cozy again. And more importantly, I hope YOU weren't too cold last night.

Okay, you candling maniacs, I need some assistance. Last night I tried candling again with just a regular ol' flashlight. I can't really see veining even on the one white egg in the bunch. But, some of my eggs definately have "something" going on. I could see thru on the bottom side of the eggs, but not in the top portion. I even candled an egg from the fridge to see the difference (*that thing had NOTHING going on

)

But....how do I know that it's a good Something and not like rotten something?
I'm assuming that I need a better flashlight to actually be able to see what i need to, but I would also hate for rotten eggs to explode in my incubator.

Hey Nellie, I use an LED flashlight cheapy thing that I bought as Walmart. White eggs are definitely the easiest, but once you've had a bit of practice brown will be manageable too! I start at the pointy end and if I have no luck I look through the round/large/air cell end. I look for a dark spot in the egg. Depends on the day you candle (the earlier, the smaller the spot, natch) but it should be about the size of a pencil eraser (ish) by day 7. Sometimes it is just a blob, sometimes it is a blob with a dark spot (the eye), sometimes you'll just see veining. If you see veining there is development. I read on here once that the veins die within a few hours of the embryo.

I smell all my eggs... my kids say I am weird, but I love the smell of incubating eggs

If you get familiar with the smell of a non-rotten egg it is my theory that you will be able to pick a stinker out of the bunch so much faster!! When an egg is not developing (started then stopped or never developed at all) you will not necessarily smell a bad smell, but you won't see veining either.

Hope this helps!! Oh, and check out the sticky at the top of this page for candling pics, they'll be helpful!
