Pigeon dust is protien dust, and yes, it can cause respiratory problems when inhaled over long periods of time (I suppose that varies depending on whether your lungs are already bad, have asthma, etc.). But you can get the same problem from other animals. Other birds and animals raised in barns are examples. A lot of horse people get problems after breathing all that dust after cleaning.
I occasionally wear a mask when I clean out the loft. Just depends on whether I think about it or not
A few indoor birds shouldn't be a problem. Especially if you keep the cage clean and give the birds baths.
Quiet birds usually means hen. But doves seen to take a while to 'tell' you whether they are male or not. Some males just don't talk much, but most do. And the same goes for hens - although most are quiet, some do talk more, which can lead to confusion. Most hens will not lay eggs without stimulation. Mine do not lay unless they have mates, even if those mates are other hens. Often times, tame single pet pigeons/doves will eventually see you as their mate. They'll follow you around, talk to you, and expect you to come over and lay an egg for them, LOL. If it's a hen, she'll lay for you, and expect you to share sitting duties
Sometimes the hens can exhaust themselves with constant egg laying, especially if they do not try to incubate any of them (thus laying as often as possible in some cases). So if any of your birds lays eggs, make sure they have plenty of calcium and if they do choose to sit on the eggs, do not remove them until they abandon them. If the eggs are fertile and you don't want babies, then replace with fake or hardboiled eggs, and let them sit until they stop.
