Did I get 5 Roosters and 1 Hen!?!?

I'm so sorry! Can you contact where you purchased them from and see if they'll swap them?

They're gorgeous roos! Put an ad out and get some pullets lined up to give your existing girl some company?

The thing is, nobody's going to want five roosters around here. Or even one really. And I no longer have the lady's number I purchased them from, nor can I find her on Craigslist where I found her originally. Looks like they're going to get "harvested".

I don't have much choice.

I did want to eventually get into raising a separate flock as meat birds. Just not originally this flock which was supposed to be for egg production.

I want to :smackthat woman for you. I am so sorry this happened!

Definitely not a seller I'd buy from again, if she was advertising pullets.

I know some folks want to support local breeders but when you're just starting out and not 100% sure on what to look for, you'll get better results from a large hatchery or reputable feed store as far as sexing birds is concerned.

OH NO, so sorry! Here are my RIR hens...

Yes, five of my six have large colored tails. From the responses here and Googling, I'm fairly certain I have five Rhode Island Red roosters. And possibly one Hen that I'm not sure is a Rhode Island red at all.

Just keep putting it out there. I know where I live, people would snatch up those Roos, RIRs are very popular due to their looks. Also do you have a local flea market that allows you to sell animals? There’s one where I live and people sell their Roos like no tomorrow. Good luck finding some more girls!

Her area has a "no roos" ordinance :( Maybe go on Craigslist and try in neighboring cities? Either way, super crappy position to be in!:hugs

OhMan, that stinks!

I purchased what I believed to be 6 Rhode Island red hens.
How old were they when you bought them?
Did you buy 'pullets' or 'straight run'?

Well, here's your chance to practice slaughtering.
How old are they now?
I slaughter cockerels at about 12-14 weeks, still tender enough for the grill but before they start harassing the girls.
