Picked up two new chicks from someone in my area -- Lavendar Orpington and a Rumpless Aracauna mix.

She said they were 8 weeks .... now that they are out of the box and in my brooder, I am seeing some potential red flags.

The orpington is HUGE -- maybe triple the size of the Aracauna mix.

Thick feet.

Stands very erect.

Comb and cheeks appearing, but, can't tell if they are full blown wattles or not.

Thoughts??

It's hard to tell when comparing different breeds. The qualities of which can be drastically different. An FYI, boys are cockerel until they reach 1 year of age. Girls are pullets until the same age.

Best of luck.

So far... nothing is saying cockerel to me but someone with more experience with Orpingtons may disagree.

She looks like my English orpington pullets who are about the same age, but I've had an American orpington fool both the seller and me as the buyer, s(he) turned out to be a cockerel. The combs on my cockerels of that age are much larger and redder and yes my orps are huge too. I only have English orps now.

OK, I looked at Hyacinths baby photos from 8/10 weeds. She's always been a giant compared to the other girls. So prepare yourself for that. Orpingtons are like turkeys in the pen. LOL. IN fact, her name is Turkey.

However, she has always stood low (except when she does that "what's that?" stand up to look thing. And she NEVER had those large side patches.

While not definitive, you're right, it raises flags.

Maybe someone else with a lavender orp can help too?
