I set 9 Jersey Giant eggs on June 2nd and yesterday was Day 7 so I candled them. I had one that had no veins and just a floating dark spot. I assumed since all the others had at least afew visible veins that it was a dud. I didnt want it to remain in there and be a hazard so I took it out this morning. I am a curious being and I am one to want to check on them and see if a) they were even fertile to begin with or b) what went wrong with developement. Well I opened it up and to my suprise there was a little chickie in it but as I said before they were on Day 7. There was no veins on the membrane but there were a few around the chick and it had developed but even further than it should have been for a Day 7 egg. Its feet were already at the seperated toe stage, scales developing on its hip and its upper limbs taking on a wing shape and kinda feathered look to them. I am curious as to what went wrong? Did I kill this chick? I know people say if you are unsure of an egg to leave it till later but I didnt see any veins or developement the egg shell was very lightly colored so it was easy to candle. Another question could it have been a different type of poutry other than chicken? I got the eggs from someone else who just gave the eggs to me to try out. The egg was kind of oval-ish and light tan with brown speckles.

I can think of no specie with an egg the size of a chickens that would develop faster. Is it possible that the egg had been brooded before you got the eggs? If so and you put the eggs in the incubator immediately that would account for the chick's development. Mistakes happen; you did what you thought was right. Was the chick moving at all when you broke the egg open? If not, the chick had died before your investigation.

I dont know if they were brooded before i received them but if they had been my husband and I drove 3 hours home and they sat in the closet till the incubator was ready a couple hours after. When I cracked it open (I only open where the air cell is located, never from any other spot) there was no movement I also candled beforehand with no movement to soeak of. This is not the only egg that has had this occurrence I have opened two more eggs only due to a noxious scent. Again only opening at the air cell and toxic fumes emitted. Both of them were also developed more than should have been. I candled at Day 3 to check them and none showed any really advanced development then again on Day 7 as should be and there were a few questionables. On Day 8 egg 1 smelled so I checked it, that was the egg I originally posted about. Then Day 9 there was a foul smell again so I checked and found another dead egg. In my opinion I would imagine a foul smell is a dead egg. Upon opening it smelled horrid this chickie had a more developed head and face but its lower body was delayed in developement. Then the smell came back later in the day so I checked again and found another. This one smelled and had what appeared to be a death/ blood ring. When this one got opened it had feathers forming on its hips and its eyelids were almost fully developed, wings were apparent, and just generally "further along " than should be. Thank you for your help and advice.
