Did my chicken freeze to death or was it some other reason

So I just got the results from the necropsy and she passed away due to an impacted gizzard. They said this is common in younger birds and that I should place a bowl of baking soda in the coop to be available 24/7 along with the oyster shells and sand that they have already.
Thanks for coming back to update.

Baking soda?
I have never heard this before.
Did they say what the baking soda does?

Any mention of grit?

Thank you for the update. Instead of sand, I would make sure that your chickens have poultry grit (granite) available in a separate container. I am not sure what the bicarb is for—it raises the pH, but other than that I don’t know what it does for the gizzard. It is used sometimes during hot weather in chickens, but it can also be a cause of gout. Can you ask what it was recommended for?

They didn't say what it was for only that it can sometimes help. They also said to give them crushed oyster shells. I told them that we have it available to them free choice 24/7 in the coop along with the sand that's when they suggested the baking soda.
When I go the the feed store I will see what options they have for grit.
I wonder if you could call them and ask for more specifics about the baking soda.

I use this for Poultry Grit, 20190212_113457.jpg ,less than $10 bucks for 25# at TSC. I keep it in a separate container. 20181214_095809.jpg It lasts a long time. GC
