Did my turkey Tom kill my chicken?

I've had a horrible past few days. I lost a guinea hen and now I've just lost my favourite chicken. She was a Wyandotte approximately 5 years old. My turkey Tom has been trying to breed with her and he's huge. A couple of days ago she wasn't looking too good - slight open mouth breathing, which she does sometimes. There was yellow tinged urates in soft stool so i started her on Baytril just to get a head start on any infection. The next day she started leaning forward, sitting forward and her back end was pulsating so I suspected egg bind. Her breathing was also gurgly and railing. I gave her a half hour warm bath and calcivet (a calcium and vitamin supplement) and put her in a crate with some hay. Later that night she passed away.

My question is: could my turkey have ruptured her lungs or broken an egg in her when he was trying to breed with her? Does egg binding cause respiratory problems? Thank you in advance for any thoughts on this.

I'm sorry for you loss.

Without a necropsy there's no way to know what happened.
To speculate from your description she may have had reproductive problems, but really no way to tell. If you still have the body and feel you could perform your own informal necropsy it would be a good idea. Sending it to your state lab will give you answers as well.

As for your question about egg binding/reproductive problems causing respiratory distress, sometimes those can cause labored breathing.

The Tom is too big for chickens, so keep him separated.

Thank you for your reply.
I've buried her, I don't think I'd be able to do an autopsy and the only vet I know of who does them is far away from where I live and it's quite expensive. (I'm in New Zealand).

I keep my birds separate but they free range together. He doesn't seem to bother the others but this one would sit for him. I'm thinking she was egg bound after reading more on the condition.

One was killed right away and another had a broken back. I put that one down. A third I heard screaming and ran over and and got him off her and she was ok in a couple of days. She does lay misshapen eggs now

How horrific! I'm sorry you experienced all that
