Thus it is rare and hopefully will never re-appear, but we keep it just in case it does...Therefore "rare" is a better term for it than "extinct"...

Polio is rare, Cholera is rare, leprosy is rare
Pox is eradicated since 1979. The fact that the virus is exsiting in laboratories, but never showed it's ugly face since 79, even for one case, don't fits the definition of rare.

Respectfully, we will continue to disagree..

ex·tinct

/ikˈstiNG(k)t/

adjective

  • 1. (of a species, family, or other larger group) having no living members: "trilobites and dinosaurs are extinct" synonyms: vanished, lost, died out, no longer existing, no longer extant, ... moreantonyms: extant

As long as one virus exists in a safe, under a rock or hidden in a enclave as yet undiscovered your definition works less than mine..

Therefore, I will stand by it being rare, it is not exinct. it is extremely rare, with only one or two places it is known exist. A coin in which only a couple copies exist is rare, it is the same with small pox..

Discussion over from my end. it is a silly thing for you to jump on my using small pox in a jest lie you did..

I am through.. have a great day

It is a good discussion! I am enjoying it! You don't have to be too serious about it!

We can try to convince each other!
What about "extinct in the wild" and "rare in Humans laboratories " I think that will bridge the gap between our views.

Oh gee.. and here I thought I was done....:lau

I will agree to "rare in human laboratories"... however, if you recall back in the 80s when they discussed keeping it or not one of the arguments against destroying it was "there might be a small enclave somewhere in the world unknown to mankind at this time"... (the part in quotations is paraphrased to the best of my recall, of what the argument was)

Darn stubborn aren't i?

It was a stupid Argument!
1. The Variola major It isn't a zoonotic pathogen that mean that THERE NON of them in animals, it could survive ONLY ON PEPOLE
SO IF THE ALL WORLD IS VACCINATED and there is a pocket of the pathogen some where it will be extinct naturally because it will have only 2 option to kill the host or to be eradicated by its immune system.
2. You don't need the V. major to produce the vaccine it is actually done by a close virus calld Variolae vaccinae
That causes the cow pox.
And yes, I am stubborn! :D
