Did you know that Cochin....

Quote:
Brahmas originated in the Brahmaputra district of India where they were also known as 'Gray Chittagongs'. They are thought to be a cross between the Malay and the Cochin. After they were first imported from Shanghai, China in September 1846 to America, they were commonly known as 'Brahma Pootras'. Later, the name was shortened to just 'Brahma' Another story is that they were brought direct from the port of Lukipoor some distance from the mouth of the Brahmapootra river in East Bengal India. These birds were bought by a man named Charles from Connecticut and the first brood was hatched in May 1847.

Langshans originated in China, and are considered one of the oldest breeds of chickens. The first import into the UK was by Major Croad, and controversy surrounded it, some saying it was the same breed as the Black Cochin. The birds where found in the Langshan district, north of the Yangtsze-Kiang River. The birds not known in Shanghai before the Yangtsze was opened to foreign trade in 1862. Some writers claim they had come across the same birds 600 miles up the Yangtsze and again further North. As the breed developed it took the name of the importer and were called the Croad Langshan (Here in the State's we shortened the name to just Langshang)
(* Information above found on another site*)

Since we are on the subject of "other names" and "true names" for breeds of chickens here is another. The Rhode Island Red's true breed name is "Red". The "Rhode Island" part of the name is just a "add on".
