Disclaimer: I do not practice Santeria nor do I endorse it, That said....

I am a Cuban American who grew up in Ohio. As I teenager we moved to Miami where Santeria is widely practised by Cubans, Haitians, Jamaicans, Brazilians etcetera. It is more of an African and Roman Catholic conglomeration. The Africans took the Roman Catholic Saints and gave them their African "Saints or Gods" names. This way they were able to continue practicing their religion in full view of the Catholic church. Many of you are very familiar with one of these "saints" if you ever watched I Love Lucy, Babalu-Aye or as he is know in the Catholic name, Saint lazarus.

I always avoided going to any Santeria rituals, but there were many and I was invited. The animals always eaten, except on the occasion that it is sacrificed for the atonement of sins. In that case the animal is thought to absorb all the evil and is never eaten. They are killed quickly with a knife to the jugular and their blood is drained. It is a very solemn ceremony and only trained santeros are permitted to perform the rite. They are supposed to be happy healthy animals, as you would only sacrifice the best to the "saint".

I abhor the religion, but I agree that it is protected under our constitution. This person was just an idiot who did not care correctly for the creatures...perhaps Babalu-Aye will deal with him.

Thanks Gallina for the info. It is fascinating that in a Christian/African hybrid religion they have an animal that absorbs sins. Further, that animal is not eaten. However, every Sunday, millions of Christians eat the one that died for their sins.

What little I know of Satanism is that it has very little to do with Satan or Christianity. It is really just a philosophy of super narcissism. In that light, I doubt anything that would require as much time and effort as an animal sacrifice would be attempted. If there is nobody more important than you, why would you give away a perfectly good animal to anyone, much less a god or spirit?

However, there are always rebellious teenagers who call themselves "Satanists" and do the comic book interpretation of what they think that means. These incidents are always hyped up by the media.

I see nothing wrong with the slaughter of animals like this. I DO have a problem with starving them to death however.

To me, as long as they then eat the meat, draining the blood to drink, although not my thing(Yuck) is no different than the way they do Kosher meat.

And why is it illegal? I am a solitary Wiccan. Is my religion illegal as well??
