Didn't get what I paid for. What to do?

This kinda reminds me of the old line:

"If you lend some one $100 and you never see that person again, it was probably a wise investment."

Carry yourself to wherever the guy is at and get your papers. If he won't pony up, call the sheriff to come on out and meet you there to get them. Show him your receipt and contract for pedigree purchase. You do have those, right?

Then, papers or not, go buy some food, feed the dog and treat it well. Hey, if you had $200 for a dog in the first place, you probably aren't hurting for the cash. Thank the Lord for that.

You learned a good lesson in economics generally called "Caveat Emptor" - and got a nice dog in the bargain. Sounds like it was worth it.

If you do want to pursue it I would file a claim in civil court to get the ball rolling (or just threaten him with if first and see if that gets him moving).

I'd fight until I got my papers if there is any. Also For the "you cant by a papered dog for $200" that may depend on the area your from. I currently am saleing my Registered Australian Shepherd puppies males $200 and Females $250 Thats a normal price for dogs around here (maybe thats why I have one sold to a family in maine..LOL) unless its Old English Bulldogs that go into the thousands or yorkies and your other lap dogs $300 to $600 is a normal price around here. As far as coon dogs and other hunting dogs $150 to $300.

I feel your pain. I bought some supposedly registered goats in November and I am still trying to get those darn papers.

Seems like now is a good time to mention contracts.

When you purchase something like a pedigree animal that has papers, you should have a sales contract that specifies those papers are to be delivered at time of purchase. Ditto for a car title, or a property deed, etc. If the papers seal the deal, they should be there.

For $15 mongrel from the pound, no. For a supposedly pedigree animal from a breeder, yes.

C'mon, people.

Yeah, I just trust people too much I guess. Someone seems like a good person to me, so I assume that they will be honest and forthright. I need to be more cynical apparently and assume that other people aren't as honest as I am.

Some people are just lazy and a phone call is easy to dismiss. Go stand on his front porch and ask for the papers face to face. I always find it easier to get what you want with a smile!

If he doesn't have them, make him sign something that states he will get you the papers by "stated date". Then if you have to take him to claims court, and you don't have a sales contract, that's your back up.

How did you hear about him? Paper, Craigslist? Post a warning to other potential buyers about fraud.

I would tell him you are coming tomorrow and picking up the papers....

Imo - I wouldn't have left the property without the papers when I bought the dog.A Lot of people can lie or are just to lazy to fill them out. This guy has probably gotten away with this before.
