adding to my flock with 6 chicks, now 6-9 weeks old. Left them in the coop all day yesterday because of pending severe weather. Home after dark, went in coop to head count the big girls, and my heart stopped. NO chicks in the penned chick section. Took the flashlight, looking all around when I heard a chick - found all of them, perched on top of the 6 foot chickenwire separating them from the big girls- their weight bending the top of the wire fence over just a tiny bit.

They were roosting on top of the chickenwire, just inches from the big girls.

also think it is funny when they roost because they hang their heads down, sleeping, til with gravity they just finally slip right off the roost!

Yep, for some reason they want to be as high as they can get. We made a nice roost for our chicks and they use it as a jumping point to get to the rafters to roost. This makes for a huge poopy mess in rafters where I would rather not have chick poo.

They won't be able to fit up there for long so I let them be for now

natural defense. if you don't want them to be able to roost in high places, think about trimming their flight feathers. doesn't hurt the bird but helps keep them closer to the ground.
