Yes a separate dish. I use a plastic coffee can with an opening cut in the side.
Rabbit feeders work, whipped topping dishes, really any dish that they can get their heads in far enough to get some.

I’ve got 4” wide budgie/parrot dish that attaches to the side of a cage but will just as well sit on the wire in the run so it doesn’t get trashed by them. Will get them some shell. Thanks folks
