Difference between a Rouen and a Mallard

Quote:
Thats what I was wondering about...shes definately a mallard then. The baby she was "hired" to baby sit has outgrown her already...and Chicky is so slim and 'petite' that shes half the size of my other 2 adults...(that are mostly Rouen but they can fly short distance) Buddy has a nice white collar and I'm told thats a mallard characteristic.

Interesting....I have no idea how this little duck got mixed in with a pen full of larger mix-breed rouen/mallard mix. Perhaps she won the genetic lotto..

Shes a sweetie though...I was prepared for scratches and all kind of battles when trying to train her to be handled...but she hopped onto my hand and leaned into my arm as if she knew she'd be safe there...

The description seals the deal. Her voice is painfully HIGH Pitched...the "laugh-Quake" hurts when she gets into the cycle. Unfortunately she is looking for a boyfriend so shes raising cane trying to attract a suitable mate...which ain;t gonna happen.

Poor duck spends so much time flattened out of the floor shes starting to look like a flounder more than a duck...
Guess shes a little older than I thought as well... oh well, it'll pass.

I'm TRYING to get pics done to upload but so far have not been able to gain the cooperation of everyone....its gonna be one at a time most likely. I'll get my mallard hen posted first.

TY everyone for the response and all the good info.

One of my Rouens is small too. She flies around in the yard sometimes but the highest she's got off the ground is maybe a little over 5 feet and flew for about 20 feet. It is possible to have a small Rouen..

Heres my "little" rouen(?)....

if shes a Rouen shes a midget!
She's got to be 7-8 mts old....having a case of raging hormones right now... She is doing everything but reading the personals trying to find a mate...

This is Chicky....the half grown female I bought as a companion to Bug...who you;ll see in the next set of pics. Chicky flys with ease, is as tame and friendly as a kitten, but as loud as a mule braying when shes looking for some attention. Sweet little bird regardless...

The rest of the family....
Drake is Buddy....
Crested female is his mate, Squeek.
The baby (young female not quite feathered in yet) is BUG aka the "Hairy Beast" with the crooked nose.

For reference, the plastic parts box that Buddy is standing on is 18" across....He's the one that likes to ride on my shoulder and hang his head in my shirt pocket...

Squeeks the Princess...she acts like shes royality...but swims like a fish...going completely under for 3 to 4 seconds at a time.

Then theres BUG....
I incubated this kid and hatched her when she could'nt bust out of her egg....her "people" are a pair of semi-wild lake ducks that still live on our pond.

Found 17 ducklings abandoned in an alley behind an abandoned building in the gravel (no nest in sight anywhere, no adult ducks either), 5 were already dead, no more than a few days old. Took the rest home and at this time doing well. First time momma to ducklings, don't know what breed they are, are they domestic, wild, can they be kept, do I have to turn them over to DNR?

Help, Please

Unless not allowed to have bird/livestock where you live, I would say keep.... But I'm an animal lover. So you've 12 little duckies? How are they doing now? Sad someone would leave them.
Also, what color are they? Any photos? May help to determine the breed.

I have a pair of rouens I got spring from home and farm. Ive noticed since we got spring weather theyve been disappearing I own 25 acres and i free range all my birds. Tonight around 10 pm tonight one of my neighbors brought 4 baby 2 maybe 3 days old ducks. Im the only neighbor with ducks. She boxed them up to save them her dogs was trying to kill them. I couldnt tell if they are from my rouens or wild mallards. For now I got them in the tote I keep my hatched babies in with a heat light. I fed them and gave them clean water. Im not sure if i can get into trouble for keeping them if they are wild. Heres some quick pics.

Omg thats sad they were abandoned i woulda done the same n brought them home thats almost how i ended up with a pair of female ducks and a pair of geese. A friend had to desperatly get ride of them. This year our geese blessed us with 4 baby goslings we lost one his dad accidently stepped on him he died the next day.
