Sorry, Amy. I'm no expert on chicks--hopefully, somebody will give us both some answers soon!

On March 21, 2009, we hatched out black, blue & splash Ameraucana eggs that we purchased from a breeder (Cree Farms in WA). We ended up with 3 splash and a blue (thought it was a black for the first few weeks). Since we're new to this breed, can some of you more experienced Ameraucana keepers help me? How quickly can you tell roos from pullets? They are now 8 weeks old, and all four look pretty much the same as far as their comb/wattle development. How quickly does a roo usually develop his comb/wattle? I'm guessing it should be more obvious by now, so are all these pullets...??

Here's one more--sorry, they weren't very cooperative for their photo shoot! LOL!

Great! I have lots of pictures of EE's. We have ten. I love them because no two are the same, same goes with their eggs! I have the most beautiful egg basket. A few lay cream, one lays pink, a couple lay very light blue and the rest lay their own shade of olive green. Some are grey green, some yellow green, some deep olive green and one lays a beautiful vivid blue green. Here are some pictures.

Here is Millie, she was a Maran/Ameracauna mix

Hi livin-green, I got some Ameraucanas from Cree Farms also! We had seven hatch, and I thought I had five blues and two blacks, but one of my blacks has turned into a really dark blue with nice lacing. I haven't figured out how to sex them either, mine are only 5 weeks old. I was told to look at the saddle and hackle feathers and if those feathers are rounded, it's a hen, if they're pointy, it's a roo. Mine haven't developed those feathers yet, so I still have to wait. i banded two suspected roos, and my suspicions are based on comparing them to their hatch-mates. The two I banded have thicker legs, are scrappier and boss the others around more, and the combs are wider then the others. With no wattles and pea combs, it will be a while before I'm 100% sure on these babies.
Hope that helps!!

realmofthewoodsranch: Thanks for the advice! I hadn't heard that, but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for either. I suppose their saddle and hackle feathers are in good enough already, but I'm not sure what is "pointy" and what is "round". I think they all do look the same, though. So, I hope they are all hens then. I want at least one roo, but I certainly don't need 4 roos and no hens!!

Good luck with figuring out yours, too! I'll keep you posted--although it looks like it's going to be the proverbial "you'll know when it either crows or lays an egg" scenario! LOL!

Amy, I had one with a chipmunk stripe a lot like that, and she/he (we're suspicious its a he!) is turning out a beautiful red color with dark lacing. I'll post a pic of my lil Chip soon
