Your view on things is just a bit short sighted. Sure you could take in some roos. You might be able to successfully house quite a few if your willing to build tons of seperate pens and be constantly cleaning them. In the end though you really don't have that much space. 5 acres here is the average size of a yard. To me that's a cute little property that might hold a handful of animals. In the end that property is gonna fill up in no time at all. I bet you if everyone on this forum did send you their extra roos you'd be packed within the month. Then what do we do? Everyone will still keep having roos. We'll just be back to where we are now with people culling while you work your butt off trying to keep that handful of roos healthy and happy.

If people are going to breed animals it is responsible to cull. Otherwise you are just adding to the current overpopulation issues we have with every pet. Now of course an even bigger part of being a responsible owner and breeder is to only allow quality animals to breed so there are fewer culls. That would have a huge impact on cats and dogs and is why neutering is such a big thing here but that does not impact the number of extra roos. You can't really breed for hens. It just doesn't work that way. No matter what you try to do so long as people are breeding chickens they are going to have cull some or we will have millions of homeless roos just like we have millions of homeless cats and dogs. I don't think a million roos fits on your 5 acres.

The OP sounds like one of those who likes to stir up the boards...lol

I will not feed the troll!!!

I think most of us have "stepped in it" online at some point. It happens. (Personally, I seem to have a gift for it!)

As a reminder to those of us who eat chickens, there are folks here who are vegetarians and are horrified at the idea of eating their beloved pets. There are others who believe that animals ought to have rights equal to ours - and who naturally have very different ideas about flock management.

This is the beauty and the difficulty of internet forums. Being compassionate toward (and yes, patient with) people we really don't understand doesn't always come naturally, that's for sure! :|

Well, the OP seemed incensed about the 'culling' and they meant 'killing' of unwanted birds.

What they didn't really address, is that for many here, killing unwanted birds doesn't mean letting them go to waste - it means killing for their own consumption.

One 'cull' bird dispatched for the freezer from a backyard happy flock = one less broiler raised in less than wonderful conditions for mass production/sale at the grocery store...

There's some more 'food' for thought on this....

And I don't think we'll hear back from the OP anyway...

In the thread the original post was at 4:38am, a following post at 4:50am, and a response from the OP at 5:02am; then a post at 7:00am.

So, maybe they haven't been back on.

Did anyone read this from the OP or did they just get carried away with emotion. This was the 5:02am post.

"i do understand what you are saying it just upsets me, and thats the best way i could describe it sorry if i have offended you. thanks for your reply"

I think a lot of you are uncharitable to a young member who didn't understand what "culling" meant.

If you look at my reply I explained it and the OP understood.

Please keep in mind that we have members new to chickens and some of the terminology is unclear and we should give every benefit of the doubt when a new member opens up something that is easily confused.

Simba, my apologies.
