The thing that I would do is to trap him and have him scanned for a microchip (unlikely), make sure he is neutered, and put a collar on him with your name and number. I have done this with many cats that appear here. I must have a sign by my mailbox! If he does belong to someone they will phone you the next time he comes home and then you can decide what to tell them. I have 10 in the house and have not picked a single one of them! I have only one feral in the barn for mouse control...I think she has "friends" around lately...they seem to show up this time of year.
