Ding, Dong, The Mink is DEAD!!!!!

ACK! DH saw a weasel today, the kind that turn white in the winter. And I found a chewed hole in the backside of my coop, now with a board nailed over it. Don't know if the mink did that or something else. And my last 3 ducks decided to sleep in the garage again tonight, the scene of the mass murder last week. I'm guessing they have short memories or the fact the pond is icing over and it's dropping below 20f tonight may have something to do with it. They now have a night light to help them see in case of another predator invasion and the live trap is in there 24/7.

Dang I really hate these critters!

What are you baiting your trap with? I lost another chicken today and we found a tunnel with little short white hairs - also thinking weasel. Have the live trap ready to bait.

A nice big mink from the wilds of MI at this time of year should be in prime condition. Hope you saved the hide, it would make something nice to help compensate for your losses.

Oh yes, DH saved the hide. My sister's BF knows how to tan and do taxidermy. The hide is in the freezer at the moment.

I baited the traps with part of the heart from the deer I shot last week. (Normally we'd eat the heart, have a really great recipe, but there's this big hole in it.....)

If the poster with the live trap needs to bait it and doesn't have heart, I'm sure anything sufficiently bloody will work.

Thanks. I've got one female muscovy and 2 males left. Last night somehow, I lured them into the chicken coop! Finally, I've got them in a really secure place since they don't like the killing field of the garage any more. The coop is like Fort Knox, hardware cloth everywhere and no cracks wider than the 1/4 inch for the doors to swing. I feel so much better now.

Traps are still set, of course.

On Baiting a trap fresh chicken livers will work for weasels or mink it's the fresh bloody smell that draws them in.
If the Chicken livers is too gross i have heard really smelly canned cat food works too.
