Hi Coopa-

I am from Winchester, CT - I am a Selectman, in fact. I noticed information regarding our chicken laws that you posted, and noticed that it was incorrect. Roosters ARE allowed in Winchester, and it says they are not. How do I change this? Can you? Believe it or not, this can be a contentious issue among some folks who cite this website as though it were a legal source, using it to intimidate the owners of roosters, as in "See! Right there! It says roosters aren't allowed!" In any case, it is my job (among other things) to know the current ordinances, and craft new ones, and I can assure you that there is no ordinance whatsoever that would prevent someone from owning a rooster.

I am in Huber Heights, OH and am trying to get the ordinance amended. We received a 6 month extension for our personal chicks and to get a Resident Initiative underway, which will put the issue directly on the ballot. Does anyone have advice for pursuing an Initiative?

I feel bad for a lot of you people. I grew up on and still live on a farm. Our chickens spend most of their days wondering the fields. They eat all kinds of bugs. Including fleas and ticks. What makes this more sad is that most people haven't really had a free range chicken egg. I feel stupid calling them free range. They are fresh healthy eggs. Put one of my eggs on your plate in the morning next to an egg from grocery store and you'll wonder what you have been eating all your life. I know this is hard for people without land but I'm all for small coops and those chickens will eat anything.

I'm from Arlington Va, where we are trying to change our zoning ordinances to allow for backyard hens. I'm involved with a group called The Arlington Egg Project- check out their website for lots of good information and ideas. Their petition is online, as well as a sample letter to the County Board:
