Muscovies in US - REGULATION CHANGES OPEN FOR COMMENTS - 10/1 update

I wonder if the law addresses the public removing dumped muscovy ducks from public areas to keep for themselves. I wonder if the feral ducks of obviously domestic origin are fair game for people to catch or if they are protected like wild muscovies.

I agree....BUT if folks would stop releasing domesticated animals into the wild this would not be an issue!

Last week someone released two sets of mange ridden starving puppies near our farm.

A few weeks ago someone released a mature, but young Chocolate Muscovy drake at a local city park pond. He is now rehomed with a lovely hen at one of our 4Her's homes. We sold him a hen. The pond's mallard type ducks were hatched and are maintained by this 4H member. There are NO Muscovy ducks. Yet someone felt it fine to release a domesticated Muscovy duck into a wild type environment.

When pet owners become responsible we won't need regulations to regulate irresponsible owners.

The problem is that, irresponsible people don't care about regulations, so it unduly affects responsible people the most

Yep!

And idiots keep dropping those unwanted puppies on us!

"Hey! There's a farm. They love animals! We will leave these mange ridden, starving, flea bitten ugly pups for them. They will love them. Plus they have lots of chickens and ducks to feed the puppies!"

The problem truely is irrisponsible people. We have a local city park that someone (or many people) are dumping their culls at. I feed them waterfowl feed out of my own pocket durring the winter because they have it hard enough. Pastel Runners, Anconas, Blue Runners, CALL DUCKS for God's sake (!), Khaki Campbells, ect ect ect... some are very nice quality and some aren't. All but maybe 5 are male. These are obviously culls where someone doesn't want that many males. I have been told that dropping off birds there is illegal, but if I was to rescue them (for example one runner has a foot broken and healed completely backwards) that I would be stealing. People for too long have the "flush your alligator down the toilet" mentality. You cannot just dump animals out in the wild. It's not good for the animal and it's not good for the enviorment. Legislation against breeding isn't the answer... a good breeder wouldn't release anything into the wild.

Can we get an update posted on this clearly stating that the law is now updated so we CAN own muscovy ducks domestically for food or eggs?

It took me a bloody long time to find out that was actually the case on my own and I think having it clearly stated in the first post would be a good idea.

I never go back to first posts if I have already read them. Updates are best listed in the last post. If you add a post, the thread bumps to the top of the forum; if you edit a post, it does not.

Not sure of the exact wording of the final rule, but I know muscovies are allowed to be kept for exhibition, personal farm use, etc.

I have muscovies and see them for sale here regularly. We keep ours for eggs, meat and mosquito control. They are nice because they are quiet except for hissing from the bushes once in a while LOL!
