Dirty butt....not sure if it's poop? PIC

I kept having problems with lice last year. I dusted several times with Sevin dust. It didn't do anything. In fact I saw lice crawling through it. They had built a resistence to it. I had to switch to an animal safe spray to get rid of the problem. I would try the sevin first. Hopefully it will work. Make sure it is the 5% sevin and not the 10%.

Treat them all and dust the bedding/liter, even if you can't find any on the other birds. Once you treat the infested ones, any lice that survive will jump hosts.

I will try that and hopefully it will work. I might just buy some spray too just in case.
At least I only have 2 chickens to do the treatment to!
Thanks for all your help and I'll post the results.

2 shouldn't be too bad.

When I had the infestation, it was in the main laying/retiree hen house with 30 birds, the Australorp house with another 10, and the 8 Standard Size Show Cochins.

Took 2+ hours to catch and spray everyone.
Those Cochins were the worst. All those feathers.

The Australorp rooster was the one spreading it to the hens in 2 houses. I was letting him visit the big henhouse. Not sure how it got to the Cochin lot.

Oh that sucks!! Well I bought the Sevin today and I found some Lice and Mite spray for birds at Petsmart.
I treated them and their coop so I'll check her butt in a couple weeks.

Her eggs are still ok for eating, right?

I would clip off the affected feathers as close to the skin as possible then wash her off and treat as needed. I had a couple who had nasty butts and one I had to clip the feathers off. The feathers grew back great and now you can't tell who I clipped and who I didn't.

Yes they are.......I use it routinely as a preventative and it's safe to eat the eggs.

Good Luck,

Mary

Wonderful! My husband was concerned so I told him I would check. I guess I'll be keeping Sevin on hand now....must be the price you pay for freeranging.

No change yet. I've treated her and the coop with Sevin a couple times. She is now sleeping in our bathroom in a cardboard cat carrier. She got a shower this evening and I didn't want her feathers to freeze.

I guess I'll just try giving her a shower once a week because that is about the only time she is calm enough for me to handle her. I sprayed her all over (except her face of course) with the lice spray.
She must enjoy being spoiled with a warm shower

In the morning I'll treat her with Sevin before she gets out of the box....hopefully
