I got three 1 week old BO's on Friday...they have dried poop stuck to their butt...I was able to take a wet cloth and clean one of them up...the other two I couldnt get it to come off them without me thinking I was gonna kill the little things...is this gonna hurt them and will they eventually clean themselves up? I hate to leave it on there but dont know how to get it off without getting them soaking wet...they are eating, drinking and pooping just fine.

You can run thier little bums under warm water, and use a childs type, soft toothbrush to coax it off. Then pat em dry, and back under the warm light. This is how I deal with poopy butts.

If it is really stuck on there you can dab some 3% hydrogen peroxide on it and the poop will dissolve faster than water. Then just rinse with some water and you're good to go.

if it's stuck to their actual butt than it's called pasting and you have to deal with it, if its just on their butt feathers than it should be alright.

That's good to know about the "pasting/not pasting"! I've been thinking my BR was pasting up, but it wasn't blocking anything so I haven't really done much with it. It's about a "vent and a half" away from her vent though, lol. I'll have to see if I can coax my other half into helping get it of with peroxide (I have a bad reacton to it) since water just isn't cutting it.

Two of my month olds had very pasty vents when they were little, i had a hard time with a warm paper towel or washcloth so I had to soak their rears in warm water for a couple minutes to get it to come off, but if you do this you probably wont need peroxide.

Thanks for all the reply's...I will check again tonight but I think its just stuck to their down, they dont have feathers yet...I will try some of the peroxide just to see if I can get them cleaned up...I dont like them dirty.....it almost seems like they had a pasty butt and now its dry and wont come off. Thanks again!!!!

Pasty butt can be dangerous for the chick - if it is pasted you MUST get it cleaned off or it can kill the chick. If it's just stuck on some down/feathers near the vent - you're OK. Just keep them warm after cleaning them up and they should be just fine.

If it were me, I'd clean them up regardless. I know I wouldn't like poo stuck to me so figure they don't exactly like it either.

I even give my big girls a bath if their rear feathers get messy. But that's just me.

After cleaning up your babies poopy bums ... you could put bag balm on the bum area too keep it from happening again.
