My hen is acting fine, eating well, bossing the other hens around and looks”normal”. She hasn’t lost weight. When I first noticed the dirty vent, I washed her off and kept an eye on her. We feed Purina Omega 3 pellet. I made sure she had fresh water and food, grit, calcium, etc. I wash the containers on a regular basis. I had another chicken at the vet for another issue, which turned out to be nothing. Rather than waste the vet visit, I had a fecal test done and I wormed all of my chickens using a Panacur Suspension 1.0 mls. This was done August 8th. She has not improved. I’m very discouraged. None of the other chickens show any signs. We also use vitamins and electrolytes. We are all tired of this heat and are ready for a Fall.

Hi. The heat is most likely causing her to have the runny poop. You could give them a watermelon cut in half or some other kind of melon to help with hydration during the heat, my girls love melons in hot weather.

Have you checked her poop for worms? That could also be causing a dirty vent. Also check the vent for lice/mites/parasites, they will be extremely small and tend to come out at night. Use a good flashlight and a magnifying glass to check her skin all around her vent.

I would also recommend soaking her vent/bottom half in a warm epsom salt bath to loosen the poop around her vent, then gently clean the vent area, trim feathers, and apply some Vaseline/Nu-Stock/Coconut oil around the vent. The lubrication will help protect her vent too.

Keep us posted!

If she eats a lot of watermelon, and drinks a lot of water--she could have extra-runny poop. It can make a mess of her back end, but should not otherwise hurt her (yes, you'll have to keep cleaning her off if that's the cause of the mess.)

I'm having this exact same problem with 2 of my pullets. I thought maybe it was worms but they are as fat as ever. I will try the carrot soup and see if that helps.

I suggest making an epson salt bath to soften the poop and slowly clean her. let her soak in warm water with the epsom salt eigth cup to a gallon of water for about 20 to 30 mins to get all that poop to loosen up. then GENTLY clean her with a soft rag. if it is still hard soak her longer. once they get this messy its not going to clean its self.

Hi all. I'm having the same problem with one of my hens. nearly 3 yrs old, Amercauna. Dirty, poop stuck to feathers around her vent (just as previously pictured). Soaked her in warm epson salts and removed nearly all the poo. After keeping her in overnight, let her back out. Not as active as normal. That was last week. Today, noticed her vent feathers are again packed with poo. Back inside and soaked/cleaned. Keeping her in my laundry room, floor covered with newspaper. Noticed she produced runny poo. Vent appears normal, no signs of inflammation. She feels thin-bony breast-can feel her sternum. Worried. Have provided water with Corid. Any further advice or info much appreciated.

Cecal poop is runny and odd once every 7 to 10 poops.
change her diet, no treats for 5 days, no food for 24 hours. only give her water.
corid is good but not a fix all. I suggest getting her some
electrolites for her water and Maybe some "Save-a-chick" probiotics in her water.
not antibiotics. whenever my girls got diarrea I give them chicken probiotics to help them digest their food better. so after 24 hours when you start giving her food back hopefully her diarrea is gone. the best ones to ask would be @Wyorp Rock @aart @Kiki and @Eggcessive these are the most amazing people i have met and can give the best advice out of everyone in my opinion.

Exactly how much deformed did you use in August?
Did you give it straight to the beak and did you repeat the dose in a week?

Thank you for the info, Kiki. I have ordered the electrolytes and probiotics, will pick them up tomorrow. By chance, am I able to mix the two items together?
