disappearing chick

i have a newfoundland dog that has been around chickens his whole life and never hurt any besides he was outside all night he keeps an eye on the outside chickens for me

I would guess it had flown out of the box rather than been eaten by the hen. I found one of my 12 day old chicks standing on the floor outside his brooder box last week. The sides are over 2' high. But you say your box has a cover on it. I wouldn't suspect your dog even if he had been in the house. I also have a chicken-safe dog and I trust him absolutely, even with the tiniest chicks in an open cardboard box. I agree with everyone else that says search your room again. Maybe the chick sneaked out when you had the lid off the box. Surely the hen hasn't eaten it? You'd think if it had eaten one, it would have eaten them all. This sounds really weird...

I once caught a broody, outdoors, eating her dead chick which had ants on it. She had no live chicks from that hatch, and I suspect she killed them, but don't know, of course. There were no ants under her the night before, that I saw, and I did check under her. I definitely think she is capable of eating it if it died, and we know other hens will sometimes kill chicks.

Did you ever find anything more?

If a boody killed a chick, either accidentally or deliberately - and it does happen, then yes she would have eaten it. natures way of cleaning up, and not attracting scavengers to the nest.

I sure hope you find this little chick. I can't believe a momma would eat it unless it died of natural causes or something...

I hope you find it.
