Disaster, now depression

That's a terrible thing to happen~~I would try again though, too.

Think of it this way: if you lost your doggie, you would eventually get another one. Keep trying with chickens. We have a dog that will eat anything, therefore, we keep the chickens cooped. It is sometimes a trial and error kind of thing, but please don't give up. They have given us such joy and laughter.

Let me thank all of you for your support. It's been a rough Thanksgiving. I can't help but feel guilty, since I'm the one who's supposed to protect them. It was a beautiful cool fall morning here and I wanted them to have a nice morning free ranging, which they were.

We found a suitable box and put them both in it and buried it good and deep so they'll go back to the garden where they grew up. It really means a lot to have everyone be so supportive. We're going to pick up three more tomorrow, with a valuable lesson learned.

I am so glad you are going to stick with it. Sometimes these lessons we have to learn are heartbreaking. Really stick with it though, they are so worth it.

I have a scar on my leg from stepping between a dachsund and a pullet. I was dancing like crazy trying to keep the $*(@*)@!! dog away from the cornered hen without reaching down adn getting bitten on the hand. The dog finally got so frustrated it turned and bit a quarter sized chunk out of my leg.

Neither the bird nor the dog were mine.

I am sorry about your hens.

That being said, that is what life is. One vile task after another. Mourn your loss, and then move on. Are you going to let a dog beat you? Like anything else you learn from your mistake and you over come it.

Otherwise, you just have to lay down and die. Spring will be here in most parts of the world and that means a chance to start over new.

If it were me, I would get rid of that dog... but now that's just me.

You might also try to get you a mean rooster that will make your dog think twice.

Wow everyone is so nice here. My mood has been steadily increasing thanks to all your kind words.

I've had my doxies since 2003, and I love them both very much. I guess I can't get mad at them for being doxies. Though I was very mad at them today, part of me felt even worse after locking them in the garage all Thanksgiving Day. We've all since had a reconciliation.

We were thinking of getting another RIR, another Buff Orpington, and since we were so fond of having two, it only makes sense to have a third, which we were thinking of having be a Plymouth. I'm open to suggestions, though.

Again, thank you all so much. Just as a final dedication to my girls, here they are just yesterday.

Well I would say the doxies were good little hunting dogs that is what they were bred to do.SO just remember and try to keep the chicks in a safe area of the yard.I have the same problem at my house. My dog killed one of my pullets earlier this fall. She had flown out of the run and I didn't realize it and the dogs killed her before I knew she was even out.But I learned too.I love the little doxies. We always had them growing up.Ours were big on killing muskrats that were actually bigger than they were.
