I had a sucessful hatch of 5 cute chicks for the last 2 days under my broody hen (all eggs were set by me on the same day). Today I checked on her and the babies and the remaining 3 eggs were still the same, no pip or anything, so I decided to take them away.

#1 I cracked for future learning purposes and an undeveloped dead embryo was in there.
#2 I cracked just a little of the shell and pulled some of the membran: I was shocked and mad of myself, because I saw little blood, a heart beat and than it started to peep at me.

Did not know what to do, so finally I decided to give it at least a chance and put it back under Mama hen. Do you think it will have a chance (obviously the yolk sac is not completely desolved yet) or will it do any harm (bacteria....) to the already hatcched chicks?

#3 I have put right back under Moma hen as quick as possible without checking any further.
Any thoughts?

You did good! Now go back and make sure it's stiill there

If she's kicked it out again, you can incubate it to hatching in a basket under a lamp with a thin cloth over the top and a damp washcloth rolled up tight in the basket for humidity....and then try to put the chick in with mama and the rest of her hatchlings after it's fluffed and dry.

I dont know if it will make it, but I dont think it will harm the other chicks to give it a chance under there.

You might want to mist it with warm water every hour or so, so it doesnt dry up...

Good luck!!

First it seems to me you have nothing to lose as long as mom will stay on the egg. Ya know this post helps by allowing me to ask the question. Doesn't mom rotate the eggs so they all develope at the same pace? Seems to me I read that she moves the outer eggs into the middle and rotates them on a regular basis so they all hatch together right? But what if she doesn't? Maybe she doesn't rotate them enough, and maybe they hatch at different times? Maybe some take longer to hatch?
Anyone want to help us newbies out? Maybe next time we won't be so quick to throw out eggs we think should be done? I never opened any to see where they were. Maybe if I waited a day or two. I could have been throwing out good eggs.

Yes, the egg ist still under Moma hen and everything seems OK.
I just feel so bad and sad, because the first chick was already there 48 hrs ago.
Never ever I will do that again, but than you read stuff like bad eggs exploding under broody hens and so.

I should have just "Mother Nature" let run its course............

Honey forgive yourself...You are evidently a kind person who just wanted to see how it was progressing....I had speckled sussex go broody in an upstairs of a chicken trailer...Hubby, lifted her up and one of her babies did a free fall of 4 plus feet...She survived and I'll pray for yours too...

Other babies and hens should be so lucky as to have such a good Grandmom!

Take care and give yourself a pat of forgiveness on your back

Thank You so much for your sweet words and prayers. I will keep you all posted.

"Rancher Hicks": maybe it it not the turning or first time broody in my case, but as to the defense of my hen I have to mention that I have set 2 different kind of eggs: 4 smaller ones/designer chickens sicilian Buttercups x Cochins (all hatched) and 4 blue eggs Ameraucaner x Cochins (1 actually hatched the first). However, 48 hrs after the first hatch I did not expect any more.

3 hrs later and my chick in question is still alive.
But the hen left the nest....., so I went with "Chicky Tocks" advice, took the eggs and put them in a small plastic container with a damp wash cloth and a heat lamp plus spray the membrane with a water sprayer once in a while. I even have an incubator thermometer with it, so I can check on temperature and humidity. Would have the incubator, too, but wouldn't that take forever to get to the right temperature (just experience from last year....)?
The hole in the membrane shows 2 little toes, so I might not have torn any blood vessels. Unfortunately a lot of the shell is missing, so I guess I really need to keep humidity up.

I went to check on the eggs last time and hen pecked at me but hit the egg, who I didnt realize was already pipping. I saw blood and was heartbroken. I rushed the egg into the house and peeled back a touch of egg to check the chick and the bleeding had stopped and the chick hatched on out a short while later (with a lil help from me) fully developed. Took chick to its mom the next morning and all is well.

It may still all work out.
