"Discussion" with husband about owning chickens

I've been married almost 21 years & the only thing my DH likes are the dogs. Anything else is just a pest & something else to feed. I won't deny myself or kids the joys of other animals & even have 3 cats that DH hates with a passion. But, he's not vindictive & isn't mean to them he just ignores them. Only compromize is the cats aren't allowed in the bed. If you're going to raise chickens read up on them & learn to build coops & pens on your own. Because if he's anything like mine you're &*&(* outta luck in him helping with their care. Although he has helped me a few times when I've been sick or the weather is too bad to feed/water them. Even though he doesn't like them he won't let them go hungry. LOL Good luck.

I need to let my Wife read it.
I live in the middle of a small town in Southern Alabama, and when I first mentioned Chickens my Wife thought I lost my mind, well after the first batch of eggs from the Bator and the fresh eggs, and my 2 year old son chassing them all over the pen my wife is now a convert.
I have no problems with smell or my neigbors, just a Dog once and a Owl.
And if all else fails you can barrow my Wifes Husband Calibration Tool, its made out of cast iron.

Muhahahahaha... Yes, or you can go to your nearest Bed, Bath and Beyond and buy a cast iron skillet. Just make sure you use a coupon so you're not spending too much money on something you're just going to dent over his head anyway!

Snewman, if your husband is a reader of books, there is a great one that put me over the edge on getting chickens. It's called "Keep Chickens", and is one lady's story of her little flock of 3. I got it from our library, and after that I knew that as soon as we moved out of the city where we lived, we would be getting some chickens. I was planning on 6, but wound up with 16 (one died), and I love them all. My husband and kids like them, but they think I'm a little nuts.

We have a beautiful home and I would never want to have something that would take away from that, even outside. We've never had anyone complain about our chickens free-ranging and rarely do they even wander from the area around their coop. We have no odor because their pen is large enough and they get to free-range. That means the only "poop" is from night time roosting. In a dry coop, the poop dries up quickly and loses most, if not all, of the smell.

Have hubby take a look at the picture by my name. Then, ask him if those chickens look "smelly" or difficult to the little girl holding them.

Tell him that I said, "If my 9 year-old little girl can care for them, anyone can."
