"Discussion" with husband about owning chickens

Where do you live? Someone close to you need to bring you some fresh eggs. My neighbor laughed at us for having chickens. We would supply him with some eggs and he would take care of our chickens when we went out of town. Before we knew it he was ordering 30 RIR.

This may not be popular around here but, get one or two and just put them in a rabbit hutch. They'd be containted, easy to clean and there's no "liability" issues.

My guess is there's more to it if he blew up like that.

Do you have any buildings to keep chicks in?

If DH gets upset about the mention of chickens, he will really blow a gasket if you brood chicks in the house!!!

If you have an enclosed building, I can get my DH to draw up the plans for the brooder he made. You can brood up to 350 chicks with it in a building that is draft free.

I would start with a few egg laying breed pullets, to get him used to the idea. If you can purchase ones that are ready to lay it would be better, since he already has the "no chickens" disease. That way the sooner you get fresh eggs to the table, the faster his disease will diminish!!!!

I don't see why any DH would care about getting chickens unless there was a REAL reason not to, such as a city ordinance or something like that. I've seen threads like this here many times over, and every time I can't believe a DH would have a coronary about something as simple and harmless as a few chickens to make their DW happy.

Just do like me and don't ask just do it. I buy or bring home what ever animal I want and hubby just goes along what else can he do? I don't tell him he can't buy a tractor or a motorcycle. So a few bucks for chickens is getting off cheap in my book. I really can't understand why a man would care in the first place.

even though this thread is 6 months old, i can't help but add to it.

after i came home from work one day 6 years ago and told my dh that i bought a horse he doesn't even bat an eye anymore.

when i mentioned i wanted chickens he definitely balked though. and then when we bought this house that came with 2 chicken coops he put up a fight before we even signed our names to the contract.

then somewhere along the line he must have talked to a few people at his work because one day he came home with an article in the paper that the local feed store was having a fella do a chicken talk.

i jumped and ordered 4 chicks before he could change his mind.

now, even though he grumbles constantly about all the work/money we're putting into building a predator-proof fun, i know he enjoys the girls. he knows i love them to death so he does too.

I brought up chickens to DH almost a year ago. Got my birds in May.

Now...DH is wanting Red Golden pheasants!

When I brought Tom and Jerry home, DH didn't talk to me for a few days.
When I bought a rabbit hutch ON CLEARANCE for $90, he didn't talk to me for a week!
My DH never had dogs or cats growing up: I did.
Part of his silent treatment was that I didn't ask his permission.
Part of it was what? They're FARM animals and this isn't a farm!
I have 2 chickens, 3 tanks of fish and a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach.
He's built and is in the process of building his 10th computer and I don't kvetch about that!
I was sure that he was going to make me get rid of the chickens when we started having trouble with a neighbour over Jerry's crowing, and when Tom was killed by a raccoon and I hired a trapper for $175.

But he knows that they make me happy, so he lets me have my birds.

I know this thread is WAY old, but I started it over a year ago and thought it deserved an update. I now have my first ever order of chicks set to arrive the week of May 12. There have been no more "real" fights with my husband, and we actually picked up lumber last week for him to build my coop! He's really into drawing up plans for things (we do a lot of house remodeling too) and so he's getting to work planning this thing. Knowing him, it will probably end up being much more elaborate than I ever dared hope. Once he gets involved in something, he goes all out. He doesn't actually know how many chicks I ordered (30, and 10 ducklings- I just couldn't narrow it down, they're all different breeds), but that's ok. The coop will be on the far side of the barn, an area you can't even see from the house, so he won't really be exposed to them much unless he wants to be. They'll be able to spend some time out of the fenced pen attached to the coop and wander safely around in the llama pasture. There's even a little river that flows through there that the ducks might enjoy, although it's kind of fast-flowing. I think it's going to be GREAT, and I can't wait!

The chickens win over converts themselves since they have so much personality. My DH was like yours, but built the pen & humored me.

Then he humored me when I hatched out some chicks. Several couples wanted some chickens for themselves after eating our eggs and reading the updates on how my chickens were doing.

Now he's upset because I gave away a chick he really likes. And didn't bat an eye when I said it would be okay because I'd ordered 6 more eggs of that breed to incubate!

Chickens really are addictive
