Mild mentions of harsh sickness and dying
Hi everyone, My rooster had a problem with his leg a long time ago, but I want to know if anyone knows what was wrong with him? In case this happens again. (Probably not) He was a blue cochin rooster, very sweet đź’” This started when he was about a week old when he started to limp. (Still in the brooder) He could still walk but he hobbled around. He was also relatively smaller than the other chicks. (Mostly hens the roosters were a mistake) Once he grew up he limped, but he was pretty okay, but one day he sat down under this bush and didn't walk around barley at all. He would move to other places once in a while but otherwise, he just sat. This is him under the bush.

The back of his leg was balled up and swollen. A displaced bone? He was about six months in that picture. After that, he started to have signs of sickness. (Squirty poop won't eat or drink etc) I gave him water and food he barely ate or drank. Around 1-2 days after that he was sitting under his bush (We had put him in a kennel before and cared for him just to keep him away from the other chickens and to care for him easily we had let him out for a while) and he was breathing very heavily. 4-6 hours after that he died. (really upset he didn't die sooner he was in a lot of pain đź’”) Does anyone know what this is? We though he was deformed at birth.

I'm really sorry for your loss. That's so hard when we try hard to help the weaker ones and they don't survive. They felt our love and caring though. :hugs

I would guess it had either a broken/fractured leg or was out of alignment, and whichever it was, never healed properly. That sounds like it was dislocated or broken. It was growing painful for him and possibly got infected. When you mention the squirty poop, that could have been due to his inability to get to the food or his leg developed an infection.

Without a necropsy, it's hard to know exactly what happened but he died knowing you cared for him.
